There's a new "Ask Segway" question up for July 18th:

Segway HTs in the country

Question: I live in a rural area of South Carolina. I go to town each day, approximately 5 miles each way. Roads are flat, smooth and paved. Is this a practical mode of transportation for a rural area?— Elizabeth Snyder-Powell

Five miles? That's perfect for a Segway, are you kidding me? I do 5.7 each way to school over the Rickenbacker, Miami Surburban Heck sidewalks, and oh yah, wind gets nasty after about 7:15 AM.

People really underestimate the power of these things in suburban or rural environments, the i-Series is perfect for them usually.

It is 2.5 miles to the station and 2.5 miles back up hill. With 8 blocks of commuting at the other end, that makes 6 miles total. I jusst barely get home with one bar left. And this is with practice. I used to run out of battery before I got home. Maybe my battery isn't working correctly. I charge up at least 12 to 24 hours after these commutes............???????????????

opti,

Are you able to do that roundtrip without charging in between?

Deviant...that's a definite negative there. I usually finish the trip with about 1-2 bars of battery left. I'll probably give it a whack for endurance one day, see if I can't get it with 3.5 (optimum), but that's going to be a while before I can even think about getting to it.

Boy Larry - your stats seem suspicious. I Seg a full 5 miles each way to work and back, always on red key. I'm pretty smooth by now. I do charge once at work, but I certainly don't have to, and have tested that more than once. I still have 2 bars left when I get home. Granted, I weigh less than you, but I don't think it would account for this difference in battery experience. Don't know how you would go about checking it out.
