The black wheels were just a little too "industrial" for me, thought that the Jeff Allen style wheels looked a little friendlier.

I used Valspar Primer, Pewter Grey and Clearcoat.

Masking the scallops was a little tricky. I used an aluminum template over the masking tape to cut around.

Didn't have any spare playing cards so I had to mask the rest the old fashioned way. :-)

W9GFO,

That is awesome. Do you have any interest in painting any other wheels (ie. if I sent you a set of wheels, and some money, would you do it)???

Awesome. Awesome. The black wheels are the biggest concern I have about the 'i' series; as some people tell me, they look "intimidating" -- maybe industrial as you said is the best word.

Agreed - the new look here is much "softer", quite a bit more like the p-series. VERY nicely done!

Thanks Raymo, Steve and Steve. Chris, I wouldn't mind painting some wheels for you. So long as you realize that the wearability is unknown and scratches will need touching up or else they will show black.

I am working on a different wheel treatment. Stay tuned...

I rode through some tall weeds today and hosed them off afterwards, didn't really notice if dirt was more visible. I think generally lighter colors show dirt less though.

Nice job W9GFO! And welcome to SegwayChat!

Your wheels look strikingly similar to the original pre-production wheels (the ones with the actual holes in them), which I always thought were a lot better looking than the black ones. I agree with SegwayUtah that the all-black may look a little intimidating to some people. Anyway, very nice!

W9GFO,

How are things going on your "other wheel treatment?" I'd love it if you could find a way to do a "for sure" durable wheel treatment. I absolutely love your wheels.

Are you coming to Chicago?

The "other" wheel treatment is still in progress, I hope to have it ready soon.

We will know for sure by tomorrow if we will be in Chicago. <s>Most likely yes!</s> Definitely yes!

Concerning the durability of the painted wheel;

Last week I gave a friend a demo. He was using an extra slow (2mph)key. He was having a great time, of course.

For some reason though, he ran right up on the curb. This was at work after hours. The curb was in the parking lot, rather it still is in the parking lot, and <s>was</s> is a very sharp curb.

He glided right towards it in a slight arc in slow motion. The right wheel bumbed and climbed onto the curb. He jumped off and the Seg shut down. No big deal.

Both batteries have small scrapes and the paint on the wheel is chipped slightly. The paint held up rather well to the concrete I think. Not even worth touching up at this point.

Thanks for the great photos.

I get spots like that on my painted wheels too. I've only touched up my wheels about three times. Most people don't notice those little blemishes. But WE do, since they're our little babies.

They usually occur along the outside rim like in the photo above or sometime into the outside of the "scallops". They only occur as a result of direct contact. I get most of mine from glancing off door frames.

The Pewter Gray is a perfect match to everything else on the HT and changes the entire visual effect of the machine from a fertilizer spreader-look to something more friendly, say a coffee maker.:)
Painting my wheels has been well worth it to me but it is a commitment because there is no reasonable way of going back.

Onward!

If you call Segway and ask real nice like, they might sell you some reflectors. These are designed to fit into the scalloped area, incluiding a different shaped one for the odd scallop. They are black, but reflect light. Bit of a pain to install without bubbles, and aligned properly. But if your anal enough you can do it.

poke little holes in the reflector before you put them in. Then you can just press the air bubbles right out. Some frame shops have a device that does this, and I'm sure some sign outfits would have them too.

If you spray the wheel and the back of the reflective decal with water it is easier to get in position.
Start rubbing the air and water to the outside edges with your fingers. If you have a bubble and can't get the air out then with a small pin punch a hole in it to let the air out. Rub it down good with you finger.

Thank you!

Yes, they were sprayed, from a can.
