View Full Version : FOUND segway!!

callipygian

Having just read through all of the lost segway posts in this forum, I am about to hopefully make one person very happy.

I recently found a Segway! If you lost it, I want to help you get it back. If you can prove to me that the one I found is the one you lost, I would love to return it to you.

I found it in the San Francisco Bay Area within the last week.

Email me callipygian @ email.com and with a little luck you'll soon be re-united with your Segway!

Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

/Aaron

Wow, Aaron, thank you, and welcome to SegwayChat. Our member GarySailor had his stolen from the Seattle area a couple of months ago. You don't suppose it could be the same one? It's the only one I know of that's "gone missing." Please send him an e-mail through his profile.

You're a good person Aaron!

I'd say check the serial numbers.

You are doing someone a service. Hope it gets to the rightful owner.

Aaron, you can also call Segway LLC in the morning at (866) 4-SEGWAY and give them the serial number off the back of the machine, and I'll bet they could help trace the owner. Thanks again. I sent Gary an e-mail telling him to check out this thread.

Another had gone missing in the Seattle area.

Callipygian. If you e-mail me the serial # I can probably find out who bought it.

I think the best thing is to call Segway.

They'll know where that belongs.

So I emailed segway, they should get back to me soon I suspect. I didn't see any serial # on it from a cursory glance. I'll have to go look harder. It's in pretty bad shape. Looks like it may have been run over by a car... hopefully it's repairable. Thanks everyone for your enthusiastic response. I didn't expect to get this many replies so fast! I'll keep you informed as the story unfolds.

Aaron, the serial number would be on a sticker across the back of the platform, just above the red reflective stripe. You might need to lift up the back of the rubber mat a little bit to read it.
I'm sure Segway will be able to tell you who the owner is if you give them the serial number.

-Alex

Sid Viscous
06-30-2003, 04:44 AM
If the sticker is gone or unreadable the serial # is also engraved under one of the batteries. I beieve the rear one, but if not there under the front.

If the serial # is written with a sharpie that means it was a replaced powerbase, the hand written sharpie one is the correct one.

Aaron, I had just about given up hope on locating my
stolen Segway. Today I was going to start on ordering another,
which I really can't afford. I do have the serial number. I emailed
you my phone number. If you would call me, hopefully we can get
this figured out and get the Segway on the way to the repair shop.
Thanks so much Gary in Kent Wa.

If this does turn out to be my 'lost' Seg.,
it may well cost me a few to get it back in running
condition but... hopefully not near what I was about
to pay for a replacement... :)

I sure hope for good news for you Gary. It's a long way from Kent to the Bay Area, but you never know. I guess if it's yours (even if it's in bad shape), just no longer wondering about its whereabouts would provide some peace of mind. I just hope we're not getting your hopes up, only to find out that this isn't your machine. Fingers crossed here too.

Wheels and Wheelin have fingers crossed also. It would be great 'PR' if the LLC restored it as a good will gesture. SEGWAY, DO YOU HAVE YOUR EARS ON ??.

If this turns out as I hope it does, I propose that each and everyone of us send a private email of thanks to the 'Finder'.

"It would be great 'PR' if the LLC restored it as a good will gesture. SEGWAY, DO YOU HAVE YOUR EARS ON ??."

Do you think it was good PR when Segway replaced all the control shafts with bent pins when customers couldn't read the directions. And had pictures of how to do it.

Or the people who admited to dropping it and broke the handlebar, and expected to get it for free.

Or how about flying employees out to train at exhorbinant costs to train everyone.

Free tours.

The early contest winners who got training and diner at Deans who still expect to get things fixed for free.

If you want Segway to be around in 10 years I would say that just because you bought a machine that everytime something that goes wrong - that is not their fault - that they should fix it for free as good PR.

I think Segway ha made wuote a few mistakes engineering (kickstand) and business wise. but they can't keep giving product and repairs away for free.

"Hey Dodge. My car got stolen, and the thieves damaged it. I think it would be great PR if you would fix it for free"

pam
06-30-2003, 05:56 PM
Hmmmm - well, this early contest winner doesn't expect things that I do to be fixed for free, unless it falls under some sort of equipment failure, which I believe is covered for the first year. (Although I could be wrong - I don't have my paperwork here to check.) But if I dropped the unit and broke the handlebars, I'd expect to pay for that. Same for a cracked fender, etc. However, if the battery failed, I would think that since I don't have a year's use on it, Segway would cover it.

Maybe it's some other early contest winners you're talking about <G>.

I will say that I think Segway has provided excellent service for us, and I, for one, am grateful. Even if I haven't had to send anything back.

Gary, I hope that this is your unit and that you can get it back. Since we're such a small subset of the total owners, I'd guess it's possible that it could belong to someone else. Have my fingers and toes crossed for you.

Sid Viscous

Pam that wasn't meant to be aimed at everyone. Most people are very reasonable about it. My point being that there is a certain amount of people who think that they should get it all for free.

For instance the guy who called me the day after he recieved the Segway, broke the handlebar and screamed at me that it should have been fixed for free. Keeping in mind that my first day working for Segway I did the EXACT SAME THING and was mortified that I had broken it.

But your attitude is exactly right. You break it you pay.
It fails with regular use Segway pays.

I feel sorry that whoevrs Segway it is that has been found got beat up and damaged, but Segway is not responsibile. Theres insurance out there, and if you don't get it . Well.... <shrug>

Didja see the movie 'Lost in America' where Albert Brooks tries to convince the casino owner to give back the money his wife lost gambling? He dreams up an ad campaign for the unmoved owner - 'the casino with heart', which features a large billboard of the owner handing he & his wife a check for the amount she lost.

This reminds me of that. <g>

i don't think segway should repair or replace a stolen segway when the owner (in this case) didn't lock it up properly or have specific insurance for the ht (which was and is available).

You are entitled to your opinion.... however DON"T insult anyone's intelligence by saying that you lock your car and Segway in your garage. Gary Sailor was given the impression that his HT WAS covered.
The idiom "Halo-Head" becomes more and more approiate.
I just keep receiving more and more impetus to go to Chicago.
Priorities and what can be accomplished are being weighed.

wheels-

i do lock and alarm our remaining car in our garage, and i also lock my house, with alarm with the ht inside when i'm not home, so i'm not sure where you're going with that?

gary's ht wasn't in a private garage, it was an open area where others can go (obviously since the ht got lifted there) also gary didn't lock his ht up properly and didn't have specific insurance for it against theft. it's not right or wrong, it is what happened. again, i don't think segway should pay for a new unit or repair it for free, i don't think that's unreasonable to think segway shouldn't give free product and services away.

all that said, i'm going to challenge you to do some homework, but i doubt you'll do it :-]

how about you ask gary how much i've personally helped him and the reward funds i put up of my own money, which will be collected if and when it's found. also ask gary who designed a flyer for him (me) and placed it around town, posted on wa state mailing lists, newsgroups, you name it.

so yah-- i am halo-head and proud of it wheels.

I have to post here because I have no other way to contact you. Your email address is no longer functioning so everything has been bouncing back. Please provide a valid email address. (you can email me at segwaychat@segwaychat.com)

You've emailed me on other occasions through the site but with the same invalid return email address.

Nope, I'm legit and I'm happy to say, the story has a happy ending. Although, unfortunately not for GarySailor. The serial numbers did not match the one stolen from Gary. Sorry Gary and I wish you the best of luck in tracking yours down. I'm betting I'm not the only honest person out there.

The good news is, the proper owner did find me through my post on this board. I just got off the phone with her. She had it strapped to her motor home on her way up to Tahoe for the weekend and it fell off. I found it lying in the middle of the fast lane on Highway 24E going into Walnut Creek. I personally can't afford a Segway of my own, but have followed the stories and hype for several years, including all the Ginger conspiracy theories.

I recognized it immediately and realized that the middle of the freeway was not the safest place for a Segway. Pulling over, I daringly (my girlfriend says foolishly) put it in the back of my car and drove home to start tracking down the owner.

It's safely locked in my garage right now, and the proper owner is going to come by in the next couple days and pick it up.

Best wishes to all of you, and thank you for your positive words and emails. I'm just glad to have successfully found the owner. It's been almost 24 hours and Segway LLC hasn't responded to any of my emails requesting help tracking down the owner. This board on the other hand has successfully re-united a lost segway with it's rightful owner!

A) We don't know, and may never know.

B) Because they're a small company, are extremely busy, and probably expect most truly "urgent" correspondence to come in the form of a phone call.

Those would be my guesses, anyway. :)

Aaron - there a few out there who would go to all the trouble you did. You are great and talk about risking life and limb! You retrieved it from the Interstate!!!! I'm with your girlfriend.

Hope you are geographically close enough to an owner to get some ride time in from someone, or failing that, that the Seg isn't damaged beyond being ridden and the owner gives you some ride time.

Also hope that in time you will be able to afford one - you are a great guy.

We're anxious to know if it was the black metal mesh tray that sells for around $80 at Camping World. We bought one but aren't sure whether we want to use it. Slide4less, if it was that one, we would be interested to know more about how you secured them that didn't work.

Dick & Janice - I use one of the black mesh carriers (check out "Traveling Segways" in my photo alblum here). I did weld two more attach points on the carrier and bumper hitch (square tubing sliding into the next size larger tubing). The whole rig was too flexible with just the original attach point. Two ratchet tie-downs on each machine with cut up foam-rubber patchs to keep the ratchets from scoring the fenders. I don't use the ramps anymore when there are two of us, much easier just to pick them up into place.

KOG!
