Despite divided input from many of you on the wisdom of listening to music while gliding, I got a Philips "Skip Free Jogproof" portable CD player and gave it a try on the way home tonight. The headphones fit just fine under the helmet. The skipping was very minimal, and usually not on the bumps. It made the glide WAY better! Used the Elvis 30 Greatest Hits CD and enjoyed the heck out of it. Advanced past the slow songs and stuck with the jumpy ones. Did you know you can dance on the Segway? No, I didn't get carried away, but a little extra movement certainly gave some relief to the feet and ankles which are used to a pretty constant lean for 6.5 miles.
Didn't feel I was lacking awareness of my surroundings. In deference to the cautions from the board, I kept the volume low while on the street and didn't raise it till I hit the river trail. Nevertheless, I could still hear the whine of the Segway, which pretty much keeps me from hearing "nature" (the birds) anyway. Keep in mind that while the trail itself has nice parts, NO ONE is going to call the Santa Ana River a scenic one, except that it does go past Arrowhead Pond and Edison Field.
Also kept an eye on the battery, but frankly I'm not as afraid of a shutdown now since SegwayUtah did the very much appreciated post about what actually happens when it shuts down. Don't think I would be unaware of it. And if the battery just got really low, I'd definitely be paying 100% attention to it by then.
Oh, I feel like such a rebel, but it really perked up the ride and put such a smile on my face.
All Shook Up,
Janice
