After agonizing about the decision for the past month I have finally decided that I can no longer not own a Segway. I called Segway tonight but I assume they do not take orders at night since they wanted me to leave a message. I will call on Monday again and hopefully I can talk to a live person. What accessories do you guys recommend? I was thinking about getting the headlight but I am skeptical about being able to ride where I live at night since there are a lot of potholes and broken sidewalks. Do these lights provide enough light to safely ride in these conditions? Which of the front mounted bags do you guys recommend? Are there any must have accessories? Any newbi help would be greatly appreciated!

hiya, and welcome to the forum. you're correct, they're not open at 11pm on a friday, but do call early on monday. here's what i would suggest:

-don't get an accessories yet, get your ht and use it for a week before you spend more $ and figure out what you'll need.
-the high end lights do provide a lot of light, but given what you're saying i'd avoid any night use, at least for awhile. but if you're going to use it at night, i would get the brightest possible light.

-as far as front bags go, i have both, but don't use either one that much, only when needed, i ride without a bag most of the time. here are 2 links that show the bags:

Hi Plesset - Welcome! You are going to love your Segway!

As far as accessories I would wait and see how you use it. I bought the front bag and quite frankly I really do not use it, prefering to use one of those Nike drawstring sacs that you can wear as a backpack or over the handlebars!

I have a nice new gray bag sitting at home gathering dust!!!!

Get used to the Seg - see what your pattern of use is and then check out the accessories here at Segchat and also at the Segway site.

Hope the wait isn't too long and that you are soon gliding the sidewalks around your town. Just remember - black key until you feel comfortable and then work your way up!

Good luck
Jill

Welcome Plesset! You'll really enjoy your HT. I'd recommend going ahead and ordering the "12.0" bag (it's great) and maybe the quick release. I agree with PT about holding off on the light, and getting comfortable with your area in the daylight first. Of course if you're like me, you'll probably occasionally travel to different places with your Segway, where night riding conditions may be a bit smoother, so you may want to go ahead and get a light. Just take it slow and easy, and have fun!

Thanks for your help guys! I usually end up ordering accessories I don't really need whenever I am excited about getting something. I think this time I may wait a little to find out how I actually plan to use this. I figure a GPS device is a must though. I am sure by the time I am done I am going to have the thing lowered,a nice stereo and a playstation :) Anybody in the Pittsburgh area?

plesset, if you'll click on search, you can search by location and find out the owners that have indicated ownership in pennsylvania, and then by city in their profiles. You can also edit your own profile to show which city and state you're from (and once you've ordered that you're a segway owner) - that kind of information is good to know. e.g., if you'd indicated you were in Florida, we would have immediately been able to give you the names of two Florida distributors (or resellers, or partners, or whatever they're called <G>). Not knowing where you are from, I had to wait until something gave it away (like your call for Pittsburgh info) before saying - check directly with the company.

I got the 12.0 bag and recommend it. Very convenient for holding things (including the kryptonite lock I bought) and also protects the segway incase it falls down. I also recommend the Arc light (it's expensive, $400, but the brightest one). You might be able to find it at your local bike store for less, but then you won't get the adapter that helps it attach to the stick which Segway provides. However, I didn't get my light from Segway and still found a way for it to attach and it looks good.

Hi there Plesset!

My HT arrived last Wednesday. I'd never seen a real one until I opened the box. The best "accessory" I can recommend is attending SEGWAY FEST in Chicago 8/29-30. We're looking forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with Forum members and the Segway community. There should be some interesting displays and demos, too. Hope to meet you there.

Be safe,
Dick

plesset,

You're in for a treat. I guarantee you'll flash the Segway smile.

Buy the 12.0 bag. I have it and use it all the time. My business evening's back-up tape is in it every evening. It's capacity is deceptively large. Also, as others have said, it protects your HT. Sometimes I flop the HT face down on the bag instead of using the kickstand. That brings up another point. Do a search on using the kickstand. I agree with the majority--don't use it at all.

Follow your bliss,
Ron

I am sorry if this has been covered but I am interested in getting an opinion on locking the Segway up when you go inside somewhere. Do you guys find that people mess with it when it is locked up. Do people try to get on it and then let it hit the ground?

I have been trying to see if anyone in my area had one and had given up in looking when low and behold I saw one going down fifth ave today. I almsot crashed my car trying to get a look since it was the first time I actually saw one in real life. I do not know how I am going to get through the next few weeks while I wait for it to arrive. Between waiting for Football season to start and now this I might be insane by the time they come!

Get the grey handlebar bag ....it's very good quality , and you will find that without one it is not easy to even carry a large envelope while you are riding. ( I dont like backpacks ) The bag holds pens, allen wrenches, cell phone, sunglasses, water bottle, and a laptop. Also, if the machine should tip over or fall forward the bag will take the hit and keep the handlebar from getting scratched or broken. Other accessories are not needed

plesset,

when locking the segway up, please DO NOT use the kickstand unless absolutely necessary. If it can be parked in a spot where it can lean against something else i'd highly recommend it. The problem is that when some goofball tries to get on it when you aren't around, they'll break that little sucker off faster than you can Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious. . .*laughs* well, actually faster than that.
