What I'd like to see is a method of quick-releasing the batteries that doesn't render the whole environmentally-sealed and secure aspect useless. My best bet so far has been to look into thumbscrews.
Wayne, think a carrier-receptacle model would work for this, whereby a battery would be screwed into a low-profile carrier, and a snap in or other QC receptacle would hold it? I'm just not going to see how spending $800 on a replacement battery set plus the offboard charger makes sense with such a pain behind switching out battery packs.

I would not even think of changing batteries.
I like my external battery just fine.
I was down to the last bar the other day when I got back to the shop. I turned on the inverter to my battery and let my seg charge.
When I was ready to go the Seg had 4 bars.
But my external battery did need to be charged again.

I whole heartily agree opti. Ease of switching out batteries would be of real interest to me!
Wayne, I'm sorry but I haven't heard about your external battery you devised. Is there a post or website that talks more about it? I didn't see it listed on your regular site.
Thanks!

Has any one tried to use the quick release lever that you use on the HT's control bar shaft on the battery screws to see if they will work as quick releases? Course you will have to buy, what, Four more? Are they long enough? Can someone make them to fit and have the little handles just hang underneath or click into place against the bottom?

Wrong size shaft, Ken. You'd have to buy 8, if they fit, there's 4 screws on each battery.

Sorry Pam, I forgot it has two batteries. How could I have forgotten that?? I think they could be easily made by a machine shop. All they need is a look at the quick release bolts that are already on the shaft and make some the right size for the batteries. Even I think just regular toggle/swivel bolts would work without the springs.
Not sure exactly what they are called. tho.
My drill press has them for locking the drilling base in place. Bend the handle at an angle and twist and start turning. When done, it just hangs to the side. Still no need for carring those extra allen wrenches. I like those quick releases for the HT shaft.

One idea is to replace the phillips head screws with socket head screws so you can use a socket wrench and avoid stripping the heads if you intend on changing them often.

Batteries should be locked in place (theft resistant) and click on and off with ease.

Replacing the screws with something more accessable would be nice. They're recessed so deeply its hard to line up your allen wrench. Fasteners that are flush to the surface, captive and with a custom theft resistant slot, like used on car wheels might do the trick, at least make battery swaps a little easier for the owner and time consuming for bad guys trying to hoist your batteries.

Use a tee handle 4mm allen wrench they will go in the hole easier and spin faster the anything else. There is one model that even a ball on the tip that makes it even easier.
