I think nearly all of us cringe at the term "scooter", but there seems to be no way to "unstick" it now. If we must live with it, perhaps it may still be distinguished from the lesser species of scooters with an alternative spelling? Anyone like "sgooter"? (same pronunciation)

I think I will try "Computerized, Self Balancing Electric Chariot" for a while and see how that works with people.

Well, it's alright by me as long as you don't put the double o's between the "H" and the "T" :)

I'm hoping it will be a while before the name really falls out <G>. I mean, how long did horseless carriage last?

According to one of Dean's lectures ---> Over ten years
BTW - I think the name will eventually be "Seg" when people don't need it defined to them anymore. It's one syllable and not ambigous with any other word. Who says Coca-Cola anymore?
"Seg" also rhymes with "Leg" - it's closest rival.
Onward!

That feels right to me, Jeff.

I entirely agree that common usage of terms will change, Jeff. Nobody refers to his or her car as an "automobile", but it still remains in our vernacular. People will eventually understand that the Segway is no ordinary scooter, but lack of a better generic term makes it unlikely the term will disappear.
I really like "glide" as the verb, it has grown on me well. "Seg" is the logical short form for Segway as a noun. It’s also is similar to "se_", not bad for subliminal marketing. While I obviously don’t know what terms were discussed within the company, it appears I was the very first person to publicly use “Seg” as a noun. To see this, substitute the real name of that other nasty site for “TIQ” in the following url (and you might have to splice together any line breaks):

If it has been said once..... it's been said well over a thousand times, A 'Glider' is a non-powered aircraft.
Put a pin in it and deflate your ego. The people are attempting to find a UNIQUE noun and verb for the Segway HT.

Sorry Mr Wheels no ego here. But it's still a glider to me. I've been calling it that probably before you ever had a chance to glide on one. I hope I'm not detecting hostility here? I'm just a poor city guy and I can't afford the type of glider you're talking about. I guess I'll take my glider and just Hang. See ya at the Fest and thanks for your support.

Hey Wayne, if I took my glider and placed it on your glider would it maintain it's balance while your glider goes back and forth? I think the cost of your glider is great. Enjoy the Glide! [^]

I think "glider" is a great way to describe a Segway HT.. and it works both as an verb (glide, gliding) and noun (glider).
'I took my glider to the store today..' , 'We went out for a glide..' , 'There was a family gliding down 5th avenue..'
I think more Segway HT owners/SC members are beginning to incorporate the term "glide" into their vocabulary as evidenced by the more frequent mentioning of the term in recent Segway related news pieces.
Examples from this month's Segway News items:
- "I'll have to look him up, and we'll go out for a glide.."
- "No significant opposition has surfaced in Texas yet, and Segway enthusiasts glide on..."
- "The president did get on the Segway and rode around with his dad and had a nice glide," she said..."
- "'You're a natural,' said Sara Powers, co-owner of Glide, a new shop at Seattle's Green Lake that began renting Segway Human Transporters..."
- "'It's like gliding,' she said once..."
- "He confidently glides up Duval Street to Dolce Vita, a cafe he frequents..."
In fact, I've been using the term "gliding" on a regular basis. We use it on the Segway FesT! site.. and I hear it quite often during my conversation with Segway HT owners across the US (over the phone.) To me "gliding" means effortless, quiet and free movement.. just like when you ride your Segway.
About GlideMaster's "ego", I'll say this.. In my opinion, GlideMaster is one of the most consistent and creative Segway HT owners I know. One of my favorite of GM's creations is the term "Book Of Seg" which Phillip Torrone used as the title for his site, bookofseg.com/.
Sure, you can't get a trademark on it.. but who cares. People will call it what "fits" and I think "glider" fits just right :)
BTW GlideMaster - don't let anyone deflate your creativity. You've got a flair for it and we love 'ya!

GlideMaster,
We'll have to try that in Chicago.
I'll push the glider (swing) while you are on the Seg. LOL

segway human transporter, that's what it is and most people i talk to call it that, it just takes a few minutes to explain and well worth it. never give up, eventually we called horseless carriages cars.
...and wheels, i don't mind when you insult me (it's a fun hobby i know) but glidemaster? he's a great fellow that has done a lot for segway owners here, in his area and the segwayfest conference. i don't think he deserves that jab.
cheers,

I have had my SegwayHT a month now. When I head somewhere, my wife asks if I am going to take the SEG (or SEG to the store etc) I have tried to get her to say "Glide" but she forgets and just says what comes naturally. There are lots of cutesy names and words, but I doubt if any of them catch on in the long run.

I got my mother to switch from scoot to glide months ago. It will be a blast to let my parents enjoy the glide in a couple of weeks for the first time.
While glide is the favorite word to describe using a Seg, It's going to take a lot of PR to get folks to use the word glider instead of Segway, Seg, HT, or scooter. I flew in a glider and I glide on a Segway. If Segway ever makes one without wheels it would be closer to a glider, but that might be called a "hover board."
I don't care what IT is called, as long as I can enjoy the glide!

GlideMaster is one of our nearest and dearest, and the "Glide" suits the feeling. I'm a glider pilot (the airplane type as well as the HT type) and I think the feeling is very similar. Effortless movement in a very smooth way!
Personally, we owe our involvement in the SC community to GlideMaster in a very real way. His dedication and steadfastness is rare in today's world and my hat is off to him! May he "Glide-On", in his graceful way, for a long time to come! [^]:D[^]:D

The man still has a bad case of GLIDE-itis, but he's a top-notch fella just the same. :D
Some of you who are newer to this board may not be aware that he was the very first HT end-user to join this this forum, and was the ONLY end-user who actually posted here for a long time. The G-Master was providing information on first-hand experiences as early as autumn of 2002. He's kinda like the "Chief GLIDER Emeritus" around these parts, and we're lucky to have him with us.

The SEGWAY HT is a "seg" and I "glide" with it . . . to me it will always be a seg and I will always use it for gliding. (Too difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.)

It just dawned on me. I use to dream of flying (really--gliding). It has always been a recurrent dream. I haven't had the dream since the HT's arrival. I go for "glide" and "gliding."

By the way, let it be known that I did not pay Fathertime or Brooster to say all of those great things. But thanks a lot guys.

Although it really isn't, I often refer to my HT as "the toy." Why? B/C toys are fun... and the Segway has serioously got to be the MOST fun thing on the entire planet.
