Armed forces to get scooter of the future

By Ray Hutton of the sunday times

The Segway Human Transporter, a scooter that uses internal gyroscopes to balance on two parallel wheels, finally went on sale in America last week after months of frenzied anticipation.

Rumours of an invention which would “change lives, cities and ways of thinking” spread when the first details of the Segway, then known as Project Ginger, leaked in January 2001. It can travel at up to 12mph, can turn on the spot and costs £3,100. Earlier this month Prince Charles tried one while attending a careers fair in Salford.

Despite suggestions that the Segway would go on sale here in the new year, the UK launch date now appears unclear. Instead, the first Segways to reach British shores are likely to end up with the military. BAE Systems, the British defence specialist which makes the scooter’s gyroscopes, will supply it to the “uniformed market” here.
