The long-awaited 'Ginger' people carrier finally became available at Comdex this week, potentially bringing an end to one of the highest-profile sagas in Web history.
Back in 2001 rumour spread through the Web of a new machine that was touted by Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Apple's Steve Jobs as being set to change the world.
The involvement of such leading lights and inventor Dean Kamen led to one of the most famous viral marketing buzzes in Net history with even the most high-brow news sites reporting the then-unknown device.
The Segway HT is the first self-balancing, personal transportation device on which users stand Ben Hur-like on a platform sandwiched between two wheels. Pushing or pulling the handle bar spurs the device forwards or backwards at speeds of up to 13MPH.
However, remaining true to its speculative history questions are already being asked regarding whether the HT is really Ginger, with reports suggesting patent irregularities between early specifications and the released model.
Certainly on first glance the machine looks unlikely to change the world and more likely to find a home on large corporate campuses and with early adopters willing to pay the high price.
Interested parties can order the Segway Human Transporter for $4,950 through Amazon, with delivery expected in March 2003.
