How do so many of you other owners seem to know how many miles you have ridden? Are you keeping a guestimate log? Or have I missed something?

One of the easiest ways is to get a city map and one of those map measurers that roll on its surface measuring the distance. A few bucks at a travel supply store.
Next up, get a cyclometer, 20~80 bucks and that becomes a speedometer/odometer and it's very accurate.
Top of the food chain is a GPS unit. Those typically have "Trip Odometers" in addition to an immediate read out on speed, travel time, fastest speed, average speed, etc. Some have particularly accurate altimeters, too. $100~600.

If you want a cheap small GPS , Garmin makes one called the Geko 101 .This is by far the smallest available that I know of. It is available on Sport Authority Website for 99.00 and free shipping....probably no sales tax. I gave one as a gift......weighs only 3.1 ounces WITH the batteries ,fits in your shirt pocket or can be screwed to a velcro band and easily attached to your Segway handlebar....you can measure Speed, Distance, and Time....plus other features. Have fun out there !
