Yes I know HT's are suppost to replace (supplement)the car, but for those occassions that arrise when you need to take it with you, how have some of you done it ? I have a small SUV with a class 3 hitch set up for 3,500 lbs, tounge weight 350 lbs. It is a little heavy for my wife and me to keep lifting it in and out of the rear storage compartment. What works???

I have a 2002 Ford Focus sedan. It's pretty darn small. The only way for me to get my HT in it is to take of the CS, and put the base in the front seat. Actually, I'm probably gonna be putting it in my car today, so I'll take some pix and post them.

I traded my mercedes sedan for a Lexus RX300 (small suv).....it was too tough getting the Segway base into the trunk or back seat of the car.....the RX makes it so much easier.......not to metion that the guys who sold me the Segway ALSO sold me the car !!!Made THEM happy too !

I use a power lift from Amigo. No effort required at all to put in, and take out of, my trunk. Works off the car battery.

I put my HT in the back seat of my Mazda 626. I lay it gentle on it's side in the backseat and use the shoulder seatbelt to secure it. The hardest part is picking up 83 lbs and coaxing it through the door. It's pretty easy for me, but I imagine lifting the 83 lbs HT and getting it at the right angle to put it into the backseat might be a challenge for some.

My HT fits great in my trunk -- I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu. I have transported my human transporter in my automotive transportation device on many occasions, most notably, when I go to work every day. I do not have to dismantle the HT at the control shaft at all, just collapse it a little.
I have taken my HT to Dallas on one occasion, and with all the other gear I had to pack (most of it being for my five-month old), it was necessary to unbolt the control shaft to make everything fit. However, we were never short on space at any one point in time -- the Malibu has a very large trunk for a mid-size sedan -- and we got there with relative ease and comfort.

Very easy to use, and takes only seconds to put in and take out of my trunk. Simple!

Hey pt, thanks so much for the offer, but...well, as it turns out, the MINI Cooper dealer in Tacoma had a used '02 in stock which had almost every option that I wanted (and a few I hadn't wanted to spring for on a new car)...so...I now have a new Segway carrier...with racing stripes... :)
I think the Chicago SegFest may just have become a road trip for me...

Pictures, please! please! I love my Insight, but am already thinking my next car may be a mini-cooper. Course I will have to go to south florida to get it - sigh.
Oh, and pictures with the HT inside, too, please.

I would strongly encourage you to check out the Segway Accessories forum on this site...the best thing I can see is the Segtray. I've seen it in person, how it functions, etc, and mine arrives next week, so I've put my money where my mouth is.
Happy gliding -- John

My HT used to fit just fine in the back of my Mini Cooper S.
That was before it was stolen. I'm still hopeing for the
insurance to come through. (trying to think positive)
I have kept the ramp I built to power the HT up and into the
Mini. If the insurance does come through, I'll be in line
ordering a new HT... Gary

*Major* bummer about your HT being stolen. :( I hope that pesky insurance company pays up lickety-split...
ummnn...if it's not too painful a topic, how did you build your ramp?

Pam ,
If you have to drive to South Florida for a mini-cooper , make sure you bring your Segway along for a glide. South Florida has some great spots for gliding .....Boca , Fort Lauderdale ,etc

Gary,
Can you post a picture of your ramp. I have a Mini and it fits in just fine but it is a 2 man job. I would love to have a ramp but haven't come up with a design that would work well and also fit in the car. Thanks

I finally got around to buying some ramps. There is a huge selection at www.discountramps.com The ramps I bought are lightweight aluminum that fold to fit in the trunk. They were $169 for a pair and $25 for shipping. They set up quickly, side by side, and it is very easy to motor the HT up the ramps.
Here's the link for the ones I bought:

I have a Ford Windstar. The rear bumper is like a four inch ledge. I took a piece of scrap three quarter inch thick marine (high quality) plywood and cut two ramps 8” by 49” I place the ramps on the bumper ledge and put the Seg in follow me mode and drive it HALF WAY up the ramp and then stand on the ramps where they touch the ground, if you don’t do this the ramps get pushed off the ledge when the Seg rides into the van. If the rear seat is removed you don’t even need to adjust the Control Shaft. If the seat is left in there is room for the Seg but you have to lower the C.S. all the way down. Taking the Seg out is just the reverse of putting it in. Turn it on in follow me mode, step on the ramps so they will not get pushed off the bumper and drive the Seg HALF way down the ramp stop and hold it in position with the twist control, back up so your feet are not in the way (the weight of the Seg keeps the ramps in place.) slowly lower it to the ground. The ramps will slide under the Segway for storage. Since I was using scrap wood I already had my cost was zero. I’ve been using this method for six months without any problems. Now that I have the drill down, it takes me about five minutes to store or unload the Segway.

I bought two ramps from a Suzuki motorcycle shop for $50.00 for the pair of them, they are light weight aluminum, 6 inches wide & 6 feet long. To get the correct length I cut about 8 inches off. The ramps and Seggie fit just fine in my 2004 Outback. I made a brace that fits from the handlebar to inside off hatch when it is closed. This keeps Seggie in place at all times, no rolling, slipping or sliding.

Here is a video of my ramp that allows my Seg easy in and out of my SUV. The ramps fold up and slide nicely under the control shaft. Two bungie cords and it is secured nicely and I'm off.

Can I transport by Seway with it laying down flat? Would that cause any problems with the battery being vertical instead of horizontal. I usually put in my truck laying down.
Zorba9

You could hang it upside down and not hurt the batteries. Chock the HT so it doesn't roll around on you when laying flat in your truck.

I carry my seg that way all the time. The batteries are sealed and orientation during transport will have no effect on them. I sometimes charge while driving too. No problems.

The batteries are a large series of cells that are soldered together. The cells are about the size of AA batteries. There is no fluid to react to their orentation. There are no issues at all and based on their position.

I carry my 180 seg on the segway hauler sold by Segway on the back of my toyota tacoma. Uses a trailer hitch and is fairly easy to use. I tried the ramp (see prior post) but found it way to time consuming to layout the ramps. The hauler works great. I bought the hauler from Legpain (from this chat) and he has made a minor adjustment to the standard seg hauler to accamodate the added height of the batteries, but the adjustment is small and does not effect the hauler at all. My feeling is skip the ramps (at least for a truck) and use a hauler.

Can you post a photo of the modification? Many of us have older haulers and have now bought new 180's. Thanks

This is the thread where legpain explains his modification:
http://www.segwaychat.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10699&whichpage=2
quote:Originally posted by legpain
Here's what to do:
cut 1/4x2x4 inch piece of stainless
drill three holes 1 inch apart on center
drill out the two rivets in the hauler at the bracket for the CS
bolt in the stainless piece
This is what I did to mine and it works great, just ask pwelty who bought it from me.
John
No pictures there except a couple from MagiMike on the first page which illustrate the problem.
Even though legpain gave the directions, I'm still a bit confused - is he saying to just take the curved support piece out completely and just have a flat piece, eliminating the support around the CS, or is he saying to move the support piece up somewhere, so it still is there for the CS?

I haven't ever seen a Segway hitch hauler in person, but this is what I think is going on.
This is an image MagiMike posted. It shows the two rivets. The bright round dots on the black bracket, one above another, seperated by an inch, are the rivets. This is a rear view.
http://segwaychat.com/photos/magimike/two%20rivets.jpg
This is a link to the image of the hitch hauler on the Segway LLC site. This is a side view.
http://shop.segway.com/images/shop/ht_hauler.jpg.lrg.jpg
I've zoomed into the area of interest, and done a little photo-chopping. Since the bracket is black and the control shaft is black, I've added a white line at the edge of the bracket.
http://www.segwaychat.com/photos/bystander/haulmod.jpg
The left picture is "before mod". The right picture is "after mod". Both pictures portray a HT with NiMH battery.
The two red dots on the left image represent the position of the rivets.
The three red dots on the right represent the bolts used to replace the removed rivets. The yellow-orange line is the stainless piece legpain mentions with the three holes drilled in it.
This is a side view, so the stainless piece is seen edge-on. The holes in it would be where the red dots are.
This last image is how a HT with a Saphion battery would sit in the modified hitch.

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense for me.

I slip my Segway into the back of my PT Cruiser with no problem at all. One will also slip into one of the basement slideouts on my RV without adjusting the CS. Both are i167's. The only problem I'm having now is deciding if I want to sell one or keep both. At present I'm leanng toward the disposal of one because I'm heading for the full time route on the road. I'm in St. George, UT at present but will be heading for Mesa in Nov.
