I went over to the state's Special Olympics today since I was in the neigborhood. I watched the "volunteer" video and decided I would love to volunteer.
I ended up being assigned to the "entertainment" area :) I helped the athletes with a few things, and got talked into (by the staff) doing a karaoke song on my Segway! I ended up singing "What a Wonderful World" in a voice similar to the melodious man himself. Just not so melodious :)
I guess this is a entertainment at a whole new level! The coaches and family members loved it, but the Special Olympics athletes did too.
I ended up giving about 30 or 40 demos on the grass (I would prefer smooth sidewalk for demos, but you work with what you have), to the non-athletes (with 1 exception I think). Everyone enjoyed it, and a number of the athletes thought it was really, really cool. I had wheels like some of them!
Plus, a number of attractive women smiled at me on the way back.
There are a few things I've learned through all of this:
* Riding a Segway looks really cool; I didn't think it would, but other people tell me it does.
* Girls love guys on Segways (if you're a girl, same probably applies).
* You can never get anywhere on time :)
I am so excited for the 'p' series release later this summer, and the currently available 'i' series is amazing.
To the future!
Chris
