View Full Version : anyone find any LED 'strip' lights for front and

I was thinking there must be someplace that sells bright LED lights in the form of a 'strip' that can be mounted to the front (white lights) and back (red lights) of the segway platform. It would be almost flat against the segway and seems like it would look good. The white lights might even be bright enough to light the path ahead of the segway. Anyone seen this or done this? Thanks. I'm looking for a good lighting solution that looks like it is more 'factory' installed.

I saw the lights on segways website, but looking for something with a little more 'high tech' look. also, led's require little battery power, last a long time, don't take up much space, and can be very bright.

I saw a guy post pics of an LED strip he was building. It's on the Segway Stuff section. It looked very nicely done. Here's a link; http://www.geocities.com/zeek71/

They appear to be pretty toolsey fellows, and I bet they could make a set for you.

You can find the LED strips at www.ledtronics.com but your very best bet is ebay motors. If you want a 5" to 20" strip of red LEDs for the back, that is. I think there are white ones that get covered with red plastic - just remove the red plastic. They only use a few watts of electricity and are cooler than the expensive ones segway sells.

A challenge for someone out there - wire the green charging LEDs to the left half and right half of the strip of LEDS you install - what a cool display to have the whole back of your segway blinking to show battery charge indication!

Thanks guys. I ccalled ledtronics.com but they do not have what i am looking for. You have to build their solutions. I want something that is preassembled and I can just push a button and turn it on. I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

Race3, I'm working on getting exactly what you're looking for. Give me a week and I'll have pics of the 2nd prototype. I have a 16 LED light bar coming to me early next week (at least that's what my buddy tells me).
It'll be a while before a final product comes out, but I gave him the outline of the front of the Seg about 2 weeks ago, and I'm expecting a custom PCB with 16 really bright white (slightly bluish) LED's any day now. There's no housing designed yet, but they have connections with an injection molder in LA. I'm making a custom 6V battery pack for it.
I'll be posting more info in the "Segway Stuff" section as soon as I get more pics.

If you're looking for loose high intensity LED's the best sources that I can recommend is http://www.theledlight.com

Sleepy, I'd be interested in seeing your work.

Steve,
I'm anxiously awaiting my prototype. Unfortunately, since I'm getting my prototype for free I don't have much leverage with pulling in the delivery date. They've been saying, "early next week" for the past 3 weeks. I'll be sure to post pics when I get them.
I'm going to run the system off of a modified 6V, 4Ah NiMH pack from NiteRider.

Hey - I'm very interested as well! By the way, can you wire the left and right sides of the lights to the two charging LEDs on the HT? It would be nice to have a great visual indicator that you can actually see!

Hey Ben,
I think I understand what you're saying... you'd like the LED light bar to replace those hidden charging LEDs on the control shaft. I think that's a great idea! But I don't think you can easily tap into those charging lights. I wouldn't want to void the warranty of the Segway-- I'm sure you'd have to open up the base platform to access them.

I just got an update on the LED boards... they're being made now, and will be ready for assembly on Friday. So, once again, the word is that it'll be ready for power-up on Monday 6/16.

Hey everyone! I got my light bar prototype rev. 2 today!
Even though I'm not selling them, I thought it might be more appropriate to post the topic in the "Segway Stuff" section. So check it out there if you're interested!
I haven't mounted it yet... I'm still at work, but can't wait to get home. I think it'll look really cool.

Thanks.
I changed the link. For some reason you can't access individual files on geocities.

If you wanted to wire up a board to make the lights "smart" you could fit an assembly with light sensors that cover the two charging LEDs, and run those to a switching circuit that would flash the strip LEDs when they sensed a flash from the charging LEDs. The strip LED's would "mimic" the charging LEDs without tapping into the wiring inside the shaft. A switch on the board would switch from "show charging" to "solid on" for regular riding.
