In Steve Duin's column in the June 5th issue of The Oregonian he notes another first for Segway owner George Hammond. Professor Hammond's first first was the National Medal of Science for his work establishing organic photochemistry as an academic discipline at Cal Tech. Now at age 82 he is the first to be ordered off the MAX train for getting on it with his Segway. This was not his first trip on the train. Hammond enjoys his Segway because it improves his quality of life by providing a means of transportation freeing him from the restricitons of emphysema and cardiac problems.
TriMet says it is a new policy. "An emerging issue." They don't know how to secure the HT on buses, so the HTs are not allowed on. So then they don't allow HTs on the MAX trains for the same reason.
In the same column, Duin reports that the Central Precinct Commander has ruled that Segways are not allowed on sidewalks. Police Bureau spokesman Brian Schmautz stated "That's not a definitive ploicy. We haven't reached one yet."
It sounds silly.
Out in the suburbs where I live, I asked a local cop if he knew anything about our city banning or restricting the Segways. I was on mine while I talked to him. His response was "I don't know. Why would they?" He suggested we might trade, my HT for his cruiser. I still have my HT.
