Okay, I'm about to turn in for the night, but I thought I'd post my progress thus far. I had nothing better to do today, so I spent about 11 hours so far modeling my Segway. Tell me what you think.

Gorgeous! What 3d Modelling software are you using? Just curious -- I can't wait to see more!

It's so clean! Looks ready for a futuristic movie debut where everyone glides on a Segway.

Wow. Jaw-dropping awesome. Beautiful job Derek. Did you actually break out the calipers to do all this?

Kelsey - My model is going to be part of my "dream house" that I'm building on my computer. I'm hoping that by the time I enough money to build my house (and no, it's not huge, 1835 sq ft) I'll already have a virtual one built.

segwayowner - In a way, I kinda am gonna make a career of it. I'm majoring in mechanical engineering @ UNH. That way, I'll be able to model/animate what my ideas, then actually bring my them to life by building them :)

toybuilding - Yup, I broke out the calipers... along with a 15" ruler, a tape measure, and some other tools (to take the HT apart). I actually got so into modeling yesterday that the same DVD repeated about 3 times before I noticed it.

Now, after a wopping 5.5 hous of sleep, I'm gonna go finish my virtual Segway (hopefully today).

Hey Derek,
Awesome model! Would you be willing to share your model? I know it's a lot of work... I started modeling my own on SolidWorks. But I just can't seem to get a good block of time to take it apart.
I've been modeling small areas just for designing my own little accessories.

Thanks,
Alex

Do you think you'll be able to animate the model once you're done?

dhugger
06-06-2003, 04:45 PM
Sleepy - Absolutely! When I'm done, I plan to post the model (in either 3ds or max format) on my (lack of a) web page.

Cube128 - Again, Absolutely! Each part of the model can be moved/rotated/scaled independently of everything else. I've already made a test animation of the HT doing a 360... so far it looks pretty good ;)

Would it be possible to load the data from the model into a CNC machine, and create custom parts for the Segway? Maybe a CNC machined aluminum handlebar assembly to replace the plastic one that people are breaking? Just one of many twisted thoughts I have on any given day:)

Well for it to work, you would need a solid block of aluminum, a few hundred or thousand. Then the CNC machine which probably cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But ya, its possible!

Well, I guess that's why machine shops make money doing that sort of thing for folks. Lucky for me, I happen to know a few machinists. Now all I need is a Segway!
