Segway LLC is now showing new lights on their accessory page
http://www.segway.com/segway/accessories.html#bags
if you click on the picture of the light (such as the one for $399) it brings up a larger picture of the light with an inset showing how the battery pack is mounted.

Those prices are ridiculous.

YES! I can make a better lighting system myself! $399 for something that many could argue should be built straight in to the unit! CRAZY!

What better way to light a $5000 scooter than with a $300 flashlight?
Come on, WORK with me here people!

I think those are the same prices as if they came from the actual manufacturers, at least on the high-end. Or at least close.
I'll just be excited to see the 2nd-generation Segway :)

I wonder if they'll make the strap-on adapter available by itself for those of us who want to mount other lights or gadgets designed for a bicycle's handlebars. They must know they're going to get lots of requests for it.

Yes, Chris, if you check the Light& Motion site you would see that those are very close to the manufacturers prices.

You know, the only thing I find kind of humorous other than the price is the "Tail Light" which clips, conveniently, onto a belt or rear-facing strap. I can just see myself, blinking at the waist with a red light!
I'm not trying to ridicule Segway's efforts (no way, jose!), but I half expected something that would be mountable under the mat perhaps for taillighting purposes.
Those prices are VERY high on some of those lights, and I don't have much use for them as I don't glide a whole lot at night. Occasionally I'll go out for a late-night glide around the neighborhood when there's hardly any traffic and stay on the streets when I do. Sidewalks at night in my neighborhood is a risky proposition -- some of those sidewalks are real humdingers, I tell you!
Regardless, I might pick up one or two of the lower-end lights just to give them a test, but I couldn't justify spending so much on the higher-end light systems. You spend that kind of money and you better get a built-in AM/FM radio and maybe even XM Satellite reception!

i've paid well over these prices for lighting for my bike(s):
http://www.gateway-websites.com/cgi-bin/ePages4.storefront/EN/Catalog/113509
the prices from segway are competitive with what's out there.

With the same light output as the $169 Segway model, I am using the "Light & Motion - Cabeza" helmet model for $150 retail (see http://www.bikelights.com/Products/Cabeza.htm ) Notice how the battery is directly under the light (I use the velcro strap around the battery.) It works nicely with two PVC 2" clamps and weather strip, however you LOSE the ability to hit the white bumper strip (you may hit the light.) I am pleased with the brighness from this model.
I would buy from Segway today because of the mount and "fast charger." Mine came with a trickle charger that is tricky to get long battery life. If you only need 2 hours of light, buy the $169 Segway model. The $289 model has a dimmer for those who must have 4.4 hours. The fantastic $399 Super bright ARC model with dim has 3 to 3.5 hour battery life. Do a search for "cabeza" on Segway Chat for previous complements on the great ARC model. You get what you pay for! - Mark

Just got a reply from Segway saying that the strap-on mount furnished with the headlights is not available as a separate item. Strange that they would offer a tailight you can pick up at any bike shop, but not something somewhat unique that would save us having to kludge something on our own.
Looks like another opportunity for Wayne...

I just got my first prototype LED board! The pic is kinda dark-- my camera doesn't do well in low light. But the concept is there. It's actually a *lot* brighter than the pic shows. The LED's are a cool white-- like the color of HID lamps.

The kickstand is deployed, so the light spot is kind of high. But in balance mode, it lights the path in front of it pretty well.

Nicely done. I like the way your light looks centered on the control stick. I just bought the Solo Logic from Segway LLC because I wanted the adjustable beam shape and the three brightness levels. But because I don't like the idea of the light off tot he side, I am thinking about buying the Solo to Cabezza adapter from BikeLights and mount my Solo like you have. And this frees up the Segway strap-on rod (which they won't sell seperately) for something else.

Here's a couple pic's of my light set up. I used pvc junction box with 2"clamp, and 2 Cateye's aimed different directions. Works well and alot less $ than Segway's endorsed lights!

I hope everyone will use lots of light, it's worth every penny!

Another advantage is how the light/battery can be used as a hand held "flashlight" when off the Segway. One bolt is left on tight, the larger one can be spun off in seconds. The two U clamps will spread enough to carefully remove the clamp from the control shaft. Use a dot of white paint on the connectors to aid in plugging in (see photo.) The wire is coiled for simplicity and restoration to a helmet light if desired.
On the flip side of using the U clamps: The light/battery sticks out from the bumper. The light/battery must be removed when I place the HT in the car. The wire behind the light can be smashed against the bumper, move the light forward as needed. Some extra velcro under the light would work great and prevent slight movement.
Glad you liked the U clamps. Use quality weather strip as shown for ease of use.

The won't sell the bracket separately??? Damn - I bought an Arc Cabeza back in late Feb and have fashioned my own velcro solution but the Segway adapter would be a bit more elegant than what I have now and the bit'o'shake that comes with my own mount.
I wonder; if they won't sell the adapter separate, is there anything different about the adapter for the $29.95 LED model vs. the $399 Arc? If not, I guess I can just buy the $29.95 LED, and only use the adapter?? $29.95 for an adapter isn't too horrible??
Anyone know for sure?

That's a great idea and you would have an extra light when needed! The mounts look the same to me. Here are all the links to the large photos.

There are separate battery holders that come with the solo and arc lights.
Notice the Segway logo at the end of the mounting post. Neat!

The person who responded to my inquiry said I had a very valid point, and that she was forwarding it to the appropriate people. So maybe it will be offered soon. But RobbW is right - $30 seems fair to me for the adapter alone.

Can anyone take a few photoes of the lights in use? Either it be their own custom rigged up light or a light from LLC? Just curious as to how far the light expands your vision ahead.
