If you purchase a replacement part, is the original part your property or is it the property of Segway? I know that a part replaced under warranty is the property of Segway.

it all depends really, call and ask. i would say many parts replaced for free under warranty will most likely need to be sent back to segway. if you'd like to keep it, you could also just buy a new part.

To even ponder whether a part that you paid for originally could be required by the seller to be returned is LUDICROUS. The only posssible exception would be when the replacement part is as 'Exchange Only' and then a 'core charge' must be stated.
If a seller has a requirement that any or all parts are 'Exchange Only' (no core charge), it must be stated as part of the original sale and a signed acknowledgement and agreement by the buyer would be a prerequisite for it to be enforceable.
Think for a minute, if a seller could legally insist that the orginal part MUST be returned..... and someone stole you control shaft, you could not buy a replacement, thus the seller forces you to make your HT worthless. CAN'T HAPPEN !
In a 'nutshell', YOU CANNOT BE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE ORIGIANAL PART IF YOU PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART.

Exactly what Wheels said. If you paid for a part, you paid for it. Period. You might get a lower price for a "core exchange" purchase -- but that's like getting a trade-in credit.
Warranty replacement is different -- companies want to discourage people abusing the system, so they insist on the return of the defective part, even if it is just a $10 mouse.

Yup... wheels and toybuilder hit the nail on the head. That is how it is! : )

If a part is under warranty I'd always think to send it back - after all, to me it's an even exchange. But even more so, at this point, I think Segway would like to see how something has failed, and to make efforts do whatevery is necessary to fix that for the future. If you've got a failed part, they can't tell what or how it failed. Now, if you just want to buy an extra of a part ("just in case") , and your current part is working, then I can't see where they'd want or need the other part back.

I know it sounds like a stupid question and your response is exactly what I thought. The reason I was wondering is because I received a new handlebar assembly and in the box was a return shipping label.

I ordered a new kickstand the day before Segway LLC made it free. I paid for the part and they sent me a dhl label. I did send the broken stand back so that the powers to be can look at it and see how it broke. To date I have no response to my plea for the money back or what happened to me stand....

It is probably just standard policy to include the return shipping label with (large?) parts that ship out.
Personally, I would like to get a broken handlebar to start snooping at the innards. Surely there is good info in there that would help one get on the data/control bus. Care to do a trade for some keys?

When I got my replacement mat, there was a return label in the box. But the person I talked to on the phone about my torn mat said that I did not have to return the old one. I think the labels are automatic.

I didn't mean to infer that you posed a stupid question. NO question is 'stupid' if the person asking is educated or receives confirmation by the answer.
BTW: There usually are a lot of people who are glad you asked because they were too timid to ask for themselves.
In my opinion, the best thing you could do with the old handlebar (for yourself and for all of the rest of us), would be to let "Deviant" have it to disassemble and eventually provide benefit for all.
One way..... SEGWAY ! !
all questions are great here.
i'd suggest the best for all of us is: if it was replaced for free (exchange) you need to return the part so segway can better improve their designs / study it.

I agree that if it was replaced for free, Segway should be given the opportunity to dissect it. They may choose to ignore it if they already know the problem, or are simply too busy elsewhere.
Otherwise, let's get these pieces into some useful dissection. Enquiring minds want to know (without risking highly valuable working equipment.) The "keys" to some really useful modifications are buried in the handlebar chips and the controller board chips. It's excavation time! (come on, it's dead, let's exhume already)
