View Full Version : Segway saves the day (sort of).

I took my Jeep in for repair yesterday and was a little miffed that I hadn't put the Segway in the trunk in the morning. I had no intention of taking it in, but a noise that had been rather intermittent suddenly became more insistant on the way to work.
I sat and waited for quite a long time for the courtesy van to arrive, and finally got home fairly late - for some reason the driver took a guy home who lives about 7 miles away when I was just about 3 miles down the road!
Today I got a ride to work (I still haven't tried to Segway all the way to work. I need to be sure to have someone available with a car in case I run out of battery and today was not the day to try it out.
My daughter gave me a ride home, but I had already called ahead and the car wasn't ready so she headed off home. After about an hour I set out on the Segway to pick the car up - what a great thing it was to have alternative transport to get down there.
An all new route so I had to be a little careful and I was very glad to have my customized key as there were a lot of obstructions on the way.
Needless to say the Seg brought a lot of people out at the dealership and generated a lot of questions. I was a little shaky on the pins tonight so I only offered one ride, but the guy declined anyway. They were all pretty impressed. When my car was brought out I prepared to get my ramp out but the manager and another guy very kindly lifted the Segway into the trunk with ease.
Segway really does save the day for me!

Jill, I've gotten in the habit of putting the ht in my trunk everday. With frequent opportunities for demos for friends, and living in earthquake country, plus the fact we're again on 'amber alert' I figure it's good insurance to have alternative transport available in case for some reason I can't get through in my car.

I took my car in for repairs and had my HT in the backseat. I parked the car at the shop and walked my HT into the office. The mechanic looked at the HT and said, "Sorry sir, but we don't work on those here." We laughed about it, I gave a couple demos and glided to work from the repair shop.

Karamozov - when I went to pick up the car I glided up to the service office and got a similar comment - Segway just causes smiles wherever it goes!
Stevew - I usually do have it in the trunk but was running late when I headed for work on Monday -wish I could just lift it in - but with a choice of hitting all the school traffic (3 near me) or attaching the ramp and putting the Segway in!!!! Well, that morning school traffic can make a HUGE difference to my commute time so the Segway lost out (well actually, I lost out).
You make some good points and it has gone through my mind that should my car break down somewhere at least I have a mode of transport to get to a garage or the like (yes - I know I can use my cellphone to call also). I wonder what would happen if you Segway'd to a freeway offramp? Would you get a ticket? Actually, probably not a good idea, it might cause an accident with people looking at the Seg instead of the road.

I have a mechanic that I trust and love (and so do everyone else I've recommended him to). I used to take 30 to 40 minutes to go from his garage to work by bus. (Much of that was waiting time.) Not anymore! I just pull the HT out and I'm at work 20 minutes later.
It's nice to go carless on my own terms! This is one of the main reasons that I bought the Segway.
My mechanic and a customer both tried the HT. And they loved it! The older woman just stepped on and glided away like she was a 9 year old - it was quite a sight!

Several years ago my motorhome blew a tire on the freeway. I took my "Honda" trail bike (110cc) off the back and proceeded to the first offramp. A CHP stopped and inquired, I pointed back to the motorhome.
He smiled, said, "Smart" and drove away. I wouldn't hesitate to use my HT for the same purpose.
BTW; After having put the inverter in the car, I don't take the HT out nearly as often.
BTW #2 without an inverter, consider leaving the HT in the car and using an extention cord to charge it.
One way..... SEGWAY ! !

I just ordered the xPower 300 Plus (plus air pump) from Amazon for $99. It looks like it'll be great range insurance, as well as tire insurance.

Wheels - I really have no excuse - I usually open the back window of the Jeep and charge through that!
Today the Jeep stayed in the garage and I Segged to the Mission, to Pedros (great Mexican food) for lunch, back to the Mission, then to a friends house and then back home - a GREAT Seg day. Only one problem! I forgot to wear sunscreen and face, neck and arms are tingling something shocking!!!!
It was soooooo good to leave the car home all day.
I am using my 'new' green (red/black combo) key and am really loving it. I feel so much more confident in getting up to speed knowing I am not going to abruptly turn by mistake. I can even handle the creek bridge and the bridge over Insterstate 5 without having my heart in my mouth the entire time! With the more relaxed riding my battery range has improved and hopefully will continue to do so.
