Does anyone know where the i, e, and p names came from? Is it just meant to be a (bad) pun that says something like "Segways are easy as p-i-e" or is there some real logic behind the 3 letters?

It would be IME, now, wouldn't it?

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

Brooster,
Sorry to override you here, but it's:
p -----> Personal
i -----> Industrial
e -----> Expeditor
For the "official" page, check out the Wayback Machine:

BTW, it's interesting to see that the P series is listed as "p80 and p133," the I series as "i100 and i167," and the E series as "e100 and e167."
But "international" would be cool as well!

Yep, that's right, I one day hope to have a piece of the Segway PIE. What is a Segway PIE. Well you can taste it if you have glide-itist like I do. A Segway PIE is composed of the following Segway ingredients: accept no substitutes.
1- P-Series
1- i-167 Series
1- e-167 Series
Now that I have my piece of the PIE (the i-series), I think I want the whole PIE. I'll be working on getting the other two pieces.

Wow, cool! Thanks everyone! It's kinda weird how things have changed, eh? The p/metro series was gonna be the "only" one availible to consumers "in late 2002." But, it turns out that we got the "industrial" model... but with black wheels. Was there a reason for the color change?
Oh yeah, GlideMaster, I loved your PIE pun, so I made some wallpaper out of it. If you'd like to see it, you can find it here: http://pubpages.unh.edu/~dhugger/Wallpaper

So the "167" sounds like "version 167" or some such. Any credibility in that?

dhugger, I really like your art work; especially the one called Logo.

I thought that p was just a joke. I might be wrong.

I'll second the compliments on the artwork, Derek! That's pretty cool!
As for the i standing for "Industrial" vs "International" ... perhaps it did stand for Industrial in the early days. Not that it really matters, but I visited New Hampshire for my orientation in February, and I have "on very good authority" confirmed that it now stands for International. And yes, "Expeditor" should be spelled with only two E's :)

Peter ... the "167" has something to do with the NiMH batteries ... it was explained to me, but I forget the particulars.

I guess that meant that the i100 was the NiCd version that never shipped.

Somebody measure a battery pack. In millimeters, is any critical dimension 167 mm?
