View Full Version : Attention Houston Area Owners -- LET'S MEET UP!

Hey gang...

I wanted to organize a "Houston-Area Gliders Guild" or something along those lines. You know, like the Hell's Angels, only nicer and without all the leather jackets and stuff!

So, I wanted to see what response ya'll have to the idea. I'd really like to get together in the downtown area of the City of Brotherly Smog (ahem!) and glide around for a while together, en masse, and just have a ball. Eventually, I'd like to create an official membership shirt or patch and meet on a recurring basis. We could discuss relevant issues and current events that pertain to our gliding. We could also help those newer owners who would like additional tips and gliding help, and perhaps even meet to demo for folks who are teetering on the brink of purchasing but haven't crossed the line... and my favorite idea, bring the Segways to people who might never have a chance to ride one: people (especially kids!) who have terminal illnesses such as cancer. I'd love to coordinate with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center perhaps to make it happen.

Imagine the impression that could be made upon these children -- owning a Segway affords us the opportunity to brighten people's lives and make them smile. I think that's such a rewarding opportunity, and I think we can do really good things with the HT.

Sure, there could be the regular meetings where we do a roundtable or even do a group glide, but we can promote our cause through public demonstration and awareness as well as taking time to volunteer ourselves for a greater good.

If any of you would like to be a part of this, I'm ready to kick it off. Please email me: god1138@swbell.net

I think it's a wonderful time and a great opportunity to take it to the next level... let me know what you think!

Sounds like fun. Put me on your list, though I won't commit to monthly meetings. Having an occasional gathering could be a ball. (yeah, I could have done this off-line, but just think of the other Houstonians who might have missed this thread!)

Well, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly... whatever works best -- I'm open to anything and just want to find some live, in-the-flesh, people who own Segways to do fun things with and eventually let the thing grow as more and more people adopt the wheels. And to promote awareness, understanding, and a "safe" image as best possible... and to do charitable and good deeds with for those who might not otherwise get a chance to glide.

I've got lots of ideas for what it COULD be, but I'd be happy to just get it off the ground first.

So, Deviant, when would be a good time for you to get together? I'm guessing sometime in the next few weekends, maybe toward the end of the month... Let me know what works for you, email me if you like, or respond here... I'm pretty loose on scheduling -- not a whole lot on my plate!

HAPPY & SAFE GLIDING TO ALL!

Robert,
I'm one of those "perhaps even meet to demo for folks who are teetering on the brink of purchasing but " teetering people and would be interested in a Houston group.
I'm probably going to buy one but have some dumb questions to ask someone who is not a paid sales person before I plunk down my $. If you get a meeting or demo together please let me know.

Mike,
I would be happy to meet you for a demo -- anytime during the weekdays after 6pm and also during the weekends (though I'll be out of town this weekend).

I'll email you with my contact info and arrange to meet up with you sometime this week if you'd like and I'll be happy to provide you with an extended 'test glide'; also, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have... I'm very knowledgeable of the HT. I've demoed for nearly 500 people in 3 months, and I've got the instructions down to a "t"!

Look for my email, and feel free to post any questions you have here unless you'd like to ask in person. By the way -- there are no 'dumb questions' -- every one of them is legitimate!

Robert, I'd be happy to participate in a group glide around downtown Houston some weekend. I've had sufficient interest shown in my idea for a Segway show at The Science Place some weekend during the State Fair of Texas that the least I can do is reciprocate.

I wonder, however, if there are yet enough HT owners in the Houston area to make a Houston owners group feasible. Maybe a Texas Owners Group that meets and glides in various cities once a quarter.

Anyway, I'm game for a weekend trip to Houston with my HT. Please let me know how I can help in the planning.

hodgepoj,

I'm still planning on making the trip to DFW for the State Fair most assuredly. In fact, I've got a hotel room on tap whenever I want it -- Let's just say Holiday Inn owes me one for some previous atrocity they committed, but I'm not going to slam them (they're making good with me, so all's well). Anyway, the wife and child and I will be there -- all I need to know is what weekend to plan to travel up there, so email me with the details.

As far as a Houston group glide, I'm hoping to get us all together the weekend of July 12th, but that may change depending upon your own schedule, hodgepoj... just let me know what works best for you -- my schedule's pretty lax!

"GOD HAS DEMO'ED THE SEG FOR ME - AND I BELEVE !!"
Thanks to Robert aka( God1138 ) for a personal demo last night. It was reassuring to hear a rave review from someone who was not a paid salesman. Now I wonder if I can still get that Fathers day promo deal ...?

Mike, I was really glad we got to meet up... I enjoyed the time we had together moreso than I usually do with anyone else. This is more than likely due to the fact that you are seriously considering a purchase and the prospect that I would have someone local to glide around town with. Like I said last night, two or more Segways is a real tour de force; one Segway by itself is great, but you get a group of them together and it's just one hell of a good time.

You're welcome for the demo, and I thank you for giving me the chance to evangelize my newfound way of life. Once you "go Seg", you never go back!

Mike, looks like the LLC is going to train you at your place -- so when it comes time for orientation and training, please let us know. Also, tell us when you put your order in and keep us posted! Incidentally, I believe you can now order directly from Segway LLC. Check their website for more info!

Everyone else here -- welcome Mike into the group and give him some hospitality! Mike's going to be a very good addition to our ever-increasing-in-numbers owners group!

I've been called to Denver on personal business, Robert, so it'll be a few more weeks before I can firm up a date for the Segway show during the Fair.

I don't know if I can make it to Houston on 12 July. The business that called me to Denver is the imminent arrival of grandson #2. The due date is the first week in July so it could be any time before or after that. My wife and I plan to stay here for a week or so after the birth so I may or may not be back in Dallas in time to come to Houston on the 12th. But I'm sure the following week would be cool (well, maybe not cool in Houston in mid July, but you know what I mean.

Hodgepoj,

I completely understand on the 'business' in Denver -- July 12th may or may not happen for a group of us -- things are still up in the air and I have some contacts to make with a few other gliders. I threw that date out as a suggestion at first to get your opinion on it. If you want me to use July 19th as a goes-by instead, I can easily start forming plans up for that date instead. You're the one making the trip, so you tell me what is most convenient for you! We'll plan around you to accomodate your schedule, so you call the shots on the date. I'd certainly rather play it safe instead of sorry when it comes to grandson #2 -- you enjoy that time with him and mommy & daddy and don't rush your schedule on my account!

Having just delivered my first child less than 6 months ago, I know family always comes first and the joy of bringing a new grandchild into the world for you is something you want to cherish -- so enjoy it and relax in Denver and soak up all the family time you can! If the 19th works for you, I'll get the Seg (errrrr.... ball) rolling with everyone else.

I'll start scouting for some very nice places to glide in the meantime as a group and if you have any suggestions on some potential 'hot spots' you'd like to include on the downtown runaround, send them my way!

Until then, take care!

I'll be happy to Glide with the Houston group ON MY NEW SEGWAY HT. Yup, I placed my order yesterday for an "i".
The waiting list seems to be down because they gave me a ship out date of only July 3rd. The orientation, I was told, will take about an hour and is done in the comfort of your own home. One Hour? thats all the training lasts now? I was told "most" of the time was spent watching a video now. Interesting, it will be fun to see what they cover before turning me loose to learn on my own.

Excellent news, Mike! Congrats on placing the order!

You should be good to go with our group glide downtown somewhere around the 19th... your batteries will be conditioned by then, you'll probably have enough glide time under your belt, and you'll be looking like a "pro" by then!

I'm surprised to hear training is down to only an hour, but after demoing to you Tuesday, I'm convinced you'll have a distinct advantage! : )

Again, I'm glad to hear my enthusiasm rubbed off onto you -- Segway owes me a 'commission' for this sale! : ) Maybe some lithium ions or something! Kidding!

I can make July 19, Robert, so let' go with that date. How about Hermann Park as a venue?

Hermann Park is a GREAT place to glide! Sounds like a plan. I'll be in San Antonio this weekend and I'll come home Sunday -- I'll start coordinating the meet as soon as I get back in town!

Ya'll have a great weekend, and be safe out there!
