A negative uninformed opinion on Seg sidewalk use appeared in Philly's 05/19/03 Inquirer OpEd page. Here was my response:

Segways Fine For Sidewalks

You couldn't sprint full speed down Market Street sidewalks at 5 p.m. could you? Well, Segways can not and will not go down Market Street at 5 p.m. at 12 miles per hour either. That's the top speed. Segway speed varies depending on conditions (just like when you walk). Let's not waste time or money imagining far-fetched, implausible scenes that can't happen. There is no reason to "ban" Segways - enjoy them.

Best regards, Micky

Is this the city of Brotherly Love? I'm certain they will let you ride the sidewalks. Tell them about the black key---it limits the speed.

My opinion made the Philly Inquirer:

(scroll down)

No space to get into different keys etc. but good point. Anybody else from Delaware Valley out there? Best, Micky

Good editorial. I'm not certain mine ever goes 12 mph. If you think a Segway is dangerous, you should try to stay out of the way of bicycles on the "closed" streets in Williamsburg, VA--especially in the early evening. Segways are not permitted there until after 10 PM (because they have a motor). I believe they are still following 1770 laws. The same for Philadelphia. Do you think they would believe me if I told them it's not a motor; but a magnetic field that controls my Segway? Kind of like that one in the second Back to the Future movie. Just don't go through water. It's not totally incorrect as a motor operates because of a magnetic field.

Here's some heavily biased and factually false reporting from Philadelphia:

"Need for Speed? A new law allows Pennsylvanians to race down the sidewalks on motorized scooters."

The old 20mph Segway, endangering lives on the sidewalk!

Bruce thank you for furnishing Citypaper link. I never saw that (from 07/02). How skewered! Fortunately, that is a small tabloid paper in Philly with low readership. The Inquirer is THE Philly paper. "contempt prior to investigation"!

Hi Lohja - I don't think Philly has your closed street laws - but we still have a law to permit public dunking of inconsiderate Segway gliders :D!! Thanks, Micky
