My lovely spouse and I went to see "Matrix:Reloaded" last night and while we were sitting in the theater prior to the movie, we were treated to the usual "NCN" (National Cinema Network) advertisements, film trivia slides, etc... NCN fare usually consists of an assortment of ads for local businesses, ads for major sponsors like Coca-Cola, and "interesting facts" about movies.

I was pleased to see a slide pop up on the screen that brought up an important piece of film trivia. Paraphrasing, it said something like "The first use of a Segway Human Transporter in a movie was in the movie 'Agent Cody Banks' (2003), where agents rode the two-wheeled devices around the CIA headquarters building".

It was cool to see the Segway appearance in that movie treated as a bit of film history! And considering that the NCN trivia slides are not sponsored by advertisers, it was a free plug for Segway.

That's the way a Segway should be used. When I was in the USAF, getting around the flightline was difficult. I did a lot of walking--inside and outside the hangars. The Segway would be great for airport/flightline use. I intend to point that out to the military brass on the 4th of July.

Those type of items usually get planted by public relations firms. LLC at this point is using PR as opposed to advertising. At some point in time they will need to use more traditional sales outlets and advertising.

I rode my Seg on to the showroom floor of my local Mercedes dealership. The sales general manager (a friend) loved it and was riding it like a pro in 30 seconds. I mentioned JM Lexus and he felt that selling Segs would be a liability problem.

There are lots of prospective Segway customers but most people like to kick the tires before they buy a set of wheels.

Happy gliding,

Fred
