fyi...don't freak out folks, just be aware this is what some folks are saying...loudly.

The Fourth International Conference on Walking in the 21st Century, Portland. Oregon, USA, May1st-3rd 2003
ENV2. The Segway is the latest "cuckoo's egg" that is threatening to hatch in the space allocated for pedestrians. Pedestrians frequently have insufficient space as it is and should not be expected to share it with powered vehicles, unless these have a clear benefit for the mobility-impaired and are not intimidating to those on foot.

we have about a year to join these groups, participate and educate. join now, i'll be at next year's conference.

I agree PT education is the answer....Montie
This is actually GREAT NEWS. The statement has a qualifier that will really help our groups to get together.
.... "unless these have a clear benefit for the mobility-impaired and are not intimidating to those on foot." Well, there is clear benefit for the mobility-impaired AND gliders on this list are posting that most of the time people are pretty welcoming of our travel. Quantifiable and numerically significant instances of "Intimidation" will occur only if/when there are a lot of Segways traveling around people who are unfamiliar or untrusting of them. By the time there are a lot of them, people will be familiar and know how they move. "Intimidation" would be an extreme reaction in that case, unless of course gliders are indeed a safety risk to walkers...
I think the AmericaWalks folks will come to see that we are much better allies than "cuckoo's eggs". The battle is between the street and the sidewalk... better to have us on their side rather than us joining with the pressure from the street. We might just be a goldern egg?
Anyway, I'm meeting with their VP at end of week. I hope she'll come to like the sound of "Walk and Roll".
Take care, R.
