View Full Version : Should I worry
HI,I have an i2 that I bought new in late fall of 2007. It now has about 1300 miles on it and I have 2 questions. I've heard this sort of grinding on the right hand side ever since I bought it and I thought it was normal. IT is a bit weird in the fact that it is not grinding every second but it cuts in every minute and sounds like a soft metal type grinding. Other than that noise all I hear is that beautiful Segway hum.
Secondly ,how long does a typical Segway last in miles with upkeep and new batteries when needed? Thank you for any help. Tory

It might not be much of a problem.
You should take it to your dealer and have them test ride it.
It should not cost more than 60 bucks for a new elastomer to be put in on the drive hub of the gear box. That is most likely the cause of the soft grind.
the elastomer is 19.99 from Segway if you do it yourself, but will need the proper torque applied to the gearbox bolts.

Thanks RhinoMods, I've never popped open any part of my Segway but I may lose my virginity on that one as I'm about 1000 miles from any dealer. I don't imagine the torque part of it will be a problem but I wonder how long it will take a dealer to send me an elastomer. Is there any place in Segway Chat that has a cutout of the gear box etc.etc. Tory

Sounds like the elastomer from the description. As for lifetime, my present i2 has done 3600 miles and shows no wear or degradation. I think the batteries are the only items that degrade significantly, the gen 1 machines had occasional problems with the foot detection switches but there are really no other moving parts other than the motor/ gearboxes and I suppose the leansteer mechanism so I would expect a long life. What is the highest mileage we know on an individual i2?

Thanks DarthSegVator, the post you said to look at sure has it all so I think I'll see if I can get some parts and tackle the job. Thanks again . Tory
