Ladies and gents, I came up with something recently that may be of significant value to the SegwayChat community. For those of you familiar with the H2G2 (HHGG - Hitchhhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Wikipedia efforts, this will be somewhat old hat. Otherwise, I'm sure the gist of the project will becomr readily apparent.

Imagine a resource for Segway users that would allow them to share their experiences with local establishments and view those of others. We see issues arising in the community now, but lack a base from which to start our efforts to get the HT approved in our locale. On a city-by-city basis, you could find local businesses or other places which are Segway Friendly, Unfriendly, or even unknowns that people want to find out about. When you go somewhere, make an entry for that location, or add to one that's already been made. You give the exact name of the place, its address, any specific instructions for Segging there, and any special considerations or instructions when you bring your HT inside if at all. If you encounter somewhere that is undecided, unknown, or unfriendly, you can leave the administrative contact information instead of comments, and the combined efforts of yourself and other Seggers in your area may sway their opnions.

This is simply a guidebook to your area. Entries for cities cover the government itself, local transit systems, police, businesses, parks, and places or facilities HT users may use in their travels. I also think that the power of having centralized information on your community may offer the possibility of coordinated action with local businesses or other locations. Property management or business owners may find that their shops see fewer visitors than those which allow Segway users to just keep their HTs in safe spots than their facilities which ban anything of the sort, and vice versa.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. If there's enough interest, I can try to work with Frank, Blink, and PT to get this off the ground and in motion to benefit all of us.

Happy trails!
Jordan

What an interesting idea. This would be a great thing for SegwayUsersGroup to host, don't you think?

Really whatever flies there Pam. I just see the need for something along these lines, and the execution of it is really independent of a specific community site.

I just think that whoever is interested in this needs to stick it wherever we'll actually see a good bit of use.

I think this is a good idea although to be successfull it would need a lot of particpation from all the Segway users. Also, how would you validate the information posted and could it be abused?

I would be happy to help with the implementation

I have to laugh because I actually had to hitchhike with my HT today - NO JOKE!

I was using it for a good part of the day already and just went up this hill and wanted to regenerate the batteries, and the sucker (HT) konked out on me (my own ditz self). So anyway, there happened to be a minivan maybe like 15ft away, and I saw the driver looking at me pushing it, in the rain(well sprinkles), I saw that he had a VTA (bus driver) uniform on and I just built up the nerve to ask him for a ride! He was too cool! He gave me a ride just about all the way. He told me that he does the route that goes right to the College. I offered him some money for lunch and he wouldn't take it. I thanked him another 10 times and then told him that I would probably see him soon on the bus. I was totally glad that I didn't have to push the HT all the way home and it was so funny, because there were tons of folks around. The whole ordeal was over within like 10 minutes of the HT shutting down.

I haven't hitchhiked since I was 18, but this was already set up for me to encounter or something - HA!

I don't recommend hitchhiking with/without your Seg at any time, but I must say that I feel kinda differant about people having experianced such kindness:)!

Now don't get me started on how I got into a CAR ACCIDENT coming home from TRAFFIC COURT on April Fools few years back. I remind friends involved every year. I should have a friggin Aprils Fools Album within a few years.

I tired now.

Well Torin, I'm sure it could be abused...after all, everything in the world can be somehow, even the HT. However I don't think that a few bad apples in the bunch should prevent us from starting a truly innovative method of keeping our wits about ourselves when using our Segs.

By the way, greetings from Key West and a belated "hi" from Ocean Reef...two amazingly seg-friendly places!

Best regards,
Jordan

Okay, now renamed "The Segger's Guide to the Galaxy".

If there is enough interest, I can start a proof-of-concept on Sunday and be gold by next Saturday. What's the feedback here, folks?

Happy trails,
Jordan
