View Full Version : Have you named your Segway?

At the risk of sounding frivolous, I will confess that I name important and much-loved possessions. As I pace the floor waiting for delivery, I'm leaning toward naming the new arrival "Andres", in honor of Andres Segovia.
Have others named their machines? What sorts of names seem to suit the personality of an HT?

Look at all the names!
At SegwayfesT, we're going to have to put a space on the name tags for "HT's name", as well as "Name" and "Segwaychat nickname".
Or maybe a second nametag (mini license plate?) for the HT with the HT's name, and a space for "glided by" for the rider!
Don't have a name for my 170 or 180, but my 167 is affectionately known as "The Beater."

Up to now, my Segway has just been how I commute to work. Hardly a notable task and certainly not worthy of being named. I mean, I've never named any of my cars that got me to and from work....why would I name my Segway?
But as I put the finishing touches on planning this trip down PCH at the end of the month, I'm thinking that my Segway needs a name. I'm asking my Segway to carry me hundreds of miles on this trip and haul a trailer full of over hundred pounds of batteries. Hmmm...I need a name that embodies the qualities of dedication, endurance, persistence and above all RELIABILITY. Also since my Segway is greyish, for some reason a donkey or mule comes to mind (especially since I gotta feed this thing every night, take care of the hooves once a week and take it for a nice long run once a month)!
That's it...I'll name it Eeyore (from Winney the Pooh)! Well, it's either that or "Gus". That's the only other mule/donkey character in popular culture that I could find during a quick search of the internet. If you folks know of other readily recognized mule/donkey characters, I'd love to hear them.
ps - Naming my Segway after a mule/donkey also has one additional benefit. If I end up having problems during the trip (or worse end up having to drag it and the trailer up a really steep hill), then I can start cussing it out as if it were my mule. Can you see it now? "DAMN IT EEYORE, GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND MOVE UP THIS HILL!" 8^) 8^) 8^)
Yup, without a doubt anyone watching something like that will figure I've gone around the bend, eh?

After more than three years, I suppose I could finally name my E-167.
I often speak of the electronic parking stand as "Waiting for me like the lone ranger's horse", so maybe I could name it "Silver" but as a Roy Rogers fan when I was a kid, it would be "trigger".
Many people have seen me glide with both my kids on the platform with me, and since it has so much storage, I have joked about it being a segway station wagon...

I do know that my favorite car of all time was my 1967 Dodge Polara, with the 440 engine, the wood planking on the sides, and the 6 foot plus set of texas long horns along the top of the windshield...
My name for that vehicle was the "beast". I have liscense plates to that regard... I did get a nasty letter from the state of Connecticut that said they do not allow for the sign of the devil on cars... Since the car had a large part from a cow on it, I was surprised at the reference...LOL

I would have thought that anyone (anyone), that had ever made more than a tandem jump (and even a few of them), would be familiar with the term.
The term goes WAAAAYYYYYYY back into at least the 70s and is still in wide-spread use today. Hell, ya can't make a CRW jump without the whole dang plane screaming it at the top of their lungs and that's -with- students on board! It's also frequently used by competition teams as an exit count.

There are several skydivers on this forum. I was also under the impression that "Black Death" had some roots in southeast asia and the Black Barets and special forces, but that is just my own recollection...
I do not recall that statement being common, and I have gone thru the tandem rating process as well. Deploying the tandem master's droge from the front position was interesting, and part of the tandem master training that I took... (THat might qualify?)
Maybe I am dating myself, as I stopped jumping 7 years ago when my son was born. My skydiving experiance spans the decade before that...

Nah. If somebody ever told you that they were a poser and talkin' out their bung. Pat Works is clearly -the- authority when it comes to stuff like that. He literally wrote the book on RW and was there from the start. Anybody from that time period (maybe just slightly before your time) would be intimately familiar with his work.

LOL My concept of the country is different from yours. Most of the people I know do not consider Chicago as being on the east coast. I would guess it has to do with the 1400 miles or so of land between it and the Atlantic Ocean, or the fact that it is relatively in the middle of the contenent, or calls itself the mid west...
All that being said, I have traveled to the mid west and have jumped in many states, and have jumped at Roger Nelson's place an hour or two west of Chicago. I have also been to the convention in Quincy Ill. a few times... (I believe 92, 93, 94)
Not that it matters, I have also jumped in Europe, (Germany, Itally, Netherlands) and all along the east coast (by that I mean states that are near the Atlantic Ocean) and other places as well. The farthest west that I recall jumping is in Las Vegas.
This is really off topic. I stopped jumping before I bought my first segway, so they do not really overlap. They will in the future...

BUT if i every do it will probably be something like "Lifesaver". I can go places and see things that I could never or would never walk. The cool thing is that at least for now, it's friendlier in places than my bike is.

At Glide St. Louis Tours we named our segways after the show Gilligan's Island. Since the tour is 3 hours long.

And since we have 8 segways

Until I have a working parking stand for my i2, I've temporarily named mine "Eileen".

You could also choose "guest stars" how about "Wrong-way feldmen"

I'm still searching for a name that fits. After last week's tumble, I considered "Bruiser." But that's a bit too Biker Gang for me. I thought about "ZoomZoom," because that's what I do on it, but I decided instead to give that name to the little smiling man in my InfoKey. Right now I'm leaning toward "Steve," just because it is so ordinary as to be funny when applied to this gee-whiz piece of technology. The only problem I have with Steve is that I don't like how it sounds when I say, "I ride Steve for twenty minutes twice a day."

I think I like the "horse" names myself... Silver, Trigger, Ol' Paint... That's why I choose Ol' Red for my i180.

Stick with horse names...if you're named Steve (or your ride is named Steve) you are destine to play polo. Trust me. In the Bay Area, we're currently at seven Steve's and counting.
Of course, this makes it very amusing moments during the game. "Here Steve...take it" as you swing. Suddenly over half the people on the field look your way.
ps - Wait a minute...DC desperately needs polo players so they can field a team in Sept for Woz World Cup. Go ahead, name your segway Steve...and when he starts veering off towards green fields with other segways on it, you'll know why. He's looking for the pile of polo mallets so you can put one in your hand!

There's only one part of Seg polo I haven't figured out. How do you make your Segway drop those little "landmines" behind it?????

Oddly enough, I rented a horse named Steve once at the Half Moon Bay stables....wierd.
In polo, I agree, but it can work in your favor too. Just yell 'STEVE!!!' and it breaks their concentration for a moment. It has happened to me on occasion.

I think "i2-D2" is an appropriate name for my Segway.
