View Full Version : Batteries for a "P" Series

Hello All,

After a long while, I finally found a job and start Monday. This is at the same place I used to work and the pay is pretty good. Now, with that I also found someone local who had a P133 they were selling and just happened to work at the same place. They are therefore going to work out payment arrangements with me so that they get paid off in 6 months. With the increase in wage and decrease in rent this is now very possible (once the checks start coming in of course).

Now, this deal is in the works now, it may not go through but looks very promising. Now, that being said, should I choose to glide to work it would be a 9.6 mile trip. The batteries on this Seg have been used about 1,000 miles. After reading the information, it does not seem as though it would be safe to assume the P would make it 9.6 miles as the high end is 10 miles. My question is, are there any batteries out there that would increase the mileage? I could glide to work, charge it at work for 8 hours a day, then glide back home! Also, how much would such batteries cost? Any feedback would be appreciated!

I'm not sure, but I believe that MTO can repack p-series batteries with higher quality cells yielding a small range increase. I know that with their repacked i series nimhs, you can get a 20% increase in power over factory nimhs. I believe new factory batteries for a p are about $400 a set. Also, consider the terrain of your commute...steep terrain yields less range. Why not just ask the fellow with the p if he wouldn't mind gliding the proposed commute to see if the p can make it?

and with that it does not go as fast or as far as the other models.

Someone with a P will have to fill you in on this from their own first hand experience. but the I-167's with the NiMH batteries used to get 8 to 12 miles to a charge on their larger battereies. And the P with it's smaller battery may not get that much of a range.

I would say that for the 9 mile trip a P might not work for you, due to it's NiMH battery range. And there has never been another battery option for that model.

I think you will like the P, it is a great machine, super for indoors due to it's smaller footprint, but for long distance gliding like you are thinking, it may not be the most ideal machine, not only due to it's range, but its top speed is less as well.

Someone with real life experience with a P can fill you in better than I. Don't buy it just because you are getting a deal on it, if it is not going to work for your needs.

Well thank you Will. I think regardless, I can make the P work, just may not be able to commute to work. If I cannot get that kind of range then I am not entirely out as most of my walking is not done at work anyway. It would be nice to be able to go to the grocery store (1.5 miles away) and pick up some beef or just glide downtown (4 miles) and visit the capitol! Worst case scenario (assuming it works out) I can just glide to the bus depot and glide onto the wheelchair ramp, then back off. That would be a total of maybe 5 miles commute.

Regardless, thank you for the information, I will look at other avenues as well.

I would imagine you can take batteries, fenders, Wheel/tires from a standard iSeries and upgrade. I thing the difference in speed from a p to an i is a factor of the wheel diameter.

Has anyone ever tried going either direction p -> i, i -> p?

Somebody at the Long Beach get-together last year had converted an i-167 to a downsized unit for his wife, using wheels from the P. Smaller footprint, lower height, and full battery range. Seems to me he found it necessary to add additional weight to the back of the platform but I can't remember why. Could it have been Ari?

While the i167 and p use the same gearbox and I'm pretty sure they use the same boards, I remember seeing somewhere that they used different chassis, hence the specially sized p-series batteries. So if one were to put i series wheels on a p series, you would get even worse mileage and possibly harm the smaller motors. I suppose you could make an I use p-series wheels and fenders, though I dunno why you would want to.
