Yesterday at the BBQ Dick and Jim From Segway OC spoke about wanting to form a local group. I am a long time member of a local car club for my El Camino as well as a 4x4 Truck Club member. Anyhow i would really like to hlep get a local seg group going with a monthly glide maybe or something along that i dont have the time to do a website as they wanted to see but i can do pretty much anything else and i am more than willing to help! Maybe a group of us can get something like this going. Im already looking at doing someing in the Rancho Cucamonga Area and once i figure out a route i'll let you all know of it and maybe set something up. Take Care All.

I'm very sad I missed the picnic. I had been looking forward to it but I ran into this kid named Tom Riddle and somehow ended up with a scar on my forehead. True story! Anyway, when the stitches come out, name the time and place and I'll be there for a ride.

"Ran into" is interesting phraseology. Glad to hear you are relatively OK. Is Tom an old friend and you "ran into" each other and decided to have a few beers . . . or did a 5 yr old run in front of your Seg . . . or . . .? You missed a bunch of new faces but many said they are planning on being at the Anaheim Hills 4th of July parade.

Well, it seems more mysterious if I say I "ran into" him, but let's just say that I actually did end up with a lightning bolt shaped scar on my forehead.

I was down at segway oc yesterday and we were talking what im looking for is who are into helping getting this local organiztion off the ground figure on 4-6 people and then we can setup a meeting a see what we want to do. Jim and dick suggested maybe have a meeting in newport in mid june on a saturday get some food and go for a nice glide. what are everyones thoughts??

Simply set a date and time that works for you. If you try to set one that is "good for everyone", it will invariably end up still not being good for somebody. That's just the way organizing groups of people goes. Obviously you'd want to avoid a popular holiday weekend or major event like during the Indy 500 on Memorial day weekend, but I'm not really certain about waiting until mid-June though. The later you push these things at the beginning, the more the date tends to slip.

How about the May 31?

well seeing as your the only guy that has responded im open to it but i think it is too close to the bbq to do that thats why waiting a few weeks makes sense and june
14th worked great for me as well.

Later the same day would be too soon. Two weeks apart is not too soon. However, we are now getting on a short timetable for people to plan. I think it wise to give 2-3 weeks notice. There are a number of people who couldn't make it last Sunday and others like myself will be there anytime. Pick the date and we'll start badgering people to show up. I'm not at all clear what is being proposed, but I don't think most of us need a formal picnic like the last one and the 4th of July to get together for a glide. I really don't understand what is needed beyond the SegOC group on Yahoo for individuals to join and make suggestions. There has just been a reluctance recently (since Todd and Sandy left) to pick a time and place. Quade tried a couple times on short notice and we had little response; I guess some people have "plans" whatever those are.

BTW, as soon as you are ready to commit to selling the new stand, make sure you post pictures here of your new i2. I think it looks great (strong and inconspicuous).

I not really understanding you either. I am trying to do what dick and jim were speaking about an organized group with a few people as sort of the leaders like yourself David C and whom ever else. Segway oc wanted to be a sort of sponsor of a local group i have been lurking here alot before i had my machine and have not seen monthly glides. No one wants a full blow bbq every month as it is expensive but a few people who can arrange glides monthly etc.. i was not aware there is a oc yahoo group but i just joined it maybe you all dont see a need for this type of group and then i guess i'll just give up. I know i would like to see something like that happen as every month i go to my car club meeting and we all go for a drive hang out talk shop get some food and what not but maybe you guys dont want that. I dont know. I think it would be something good to see.

As far a the kick stand new pics will be posted in the post we have in the forsale forum. We already have a few of those stands in stock. If people want them jim at segway oc will be your best source. see the post here:

I think that's EXACTLY what we all want!

If you ask what we think, expects some ideas you may not have previously considered. Don't "give up" just because we have a couple of ideas to toss into the mess.

Getting any organization off the ground is HARD. Coordinating people's schedules is HARD. As I said before, ultimately you just pick a date, time and location. It's not going to "work" for everyone. Some people will want a higher frequency and others won't be able to commit due to other things in their lives. It doesn't matter. Whatever works for Jim, Dick and yourself is fine; it's just that some of us would like to get it going even faster.

As to previously scheduled monthly rides; like just about -all- outdoor activities the period between Halloween and New Years is difficult for almost everyone due to holidays and the overlapping period from Halloween to the Vernal Equinox can be difficult due to weather. Ask John about a Newport Back Bay ride we had several months ago, chilly! Anyway, my point is that if you haven't noticed rides being put together in the last few months, desire to put one together wasn't the issue; it's just the way it goes some times.

is a couple of people who are willing to champion the idea and make it happen.

Once you have those people then others will gladly come out and partake.

Just not everyone wants to lead or be responsible for getting it up and running.

You will find a lot of people who will be very happy you do get a local SEG running.

Ours DCSEG has been in existance since early 2003 and we have a good time.

Funny thing is I am active in both my car club and my local SEG - how on earth did that happen?

Quade,

i know the holidays are ruff we we have club meetings year round and even a holiday party. it just seems to be like i am trying to be very enthusiastic and i am open to ideas why do you think i posted here? I am open to many idea but maybe i took bentbiker post wrong but to me he is saying we dont need more than a yahoo group that exists. I am currently looking into running the pacific electric trail that runs all through rancho cucamonga as a glide for smetime later this year after it cools off a bit but i am all up for a glide in june by the beach where we can discuss how to procced with this idea and make a plan. Thats the best i can offer. If june 14th sounds good lets make that the date i dont know much about the newport glide but i hear it is pretty.

Well, I figure I'd give it a go.....

I plugged in the segoc group and tried the mapping feature. It took a while to figure it out, but I managed to put in a few of the glides we've done, and hopefully people can try them out and post their own.

Quade, just saw your group so I signed up, and noticed I duplicated your back bay route.:)

The mapping feature is cool.

The mapping feature is cool.

(shudder) The mapping function on the social.segway.com site is, in my opinion, an utter disaster. I can't figure out why on earth they didn't use the google api.

What's worse is that it's all hidden -behind- a Flash wrapper so you can't actually -do- anything with it. Ya can't link it. Ya can't email it. It's silly. Ya can't import routes you may have captured while riding with a gps. Ya certainly can't -export- routes into a gps.

Heck, ya can't even -look- at the maps on a portable device like an iPhone while riding because, like I said, it's -behind- the Flash wrapper.

Further, just -try- making a one way route. Ya can't. On the social.segway.com site ALL routes get turned into a closed loop. For instance, look at any of the test entries I made for the Santa Ana River Trail (SART).

Lastly, it's amazingly slow.

Grrr . . . such potential . . . wasted.

Wanna see how routes -should- look? Go to here (http://web.mac.com/pquade/SoCalSeg/Newport_Back_Bay.html). Now, I'll admit that this is viewer only and I formatted it specifically for the iPhone, but, it comes up FAST (even on Edge), was imported from a gps track (so no hand input), has satellite photos, has photos and wiki entires for local interests . . .

I just don't think the company that Segway Inc hired to do their web site did a very good job.

Did we ever determine a time, date and place for the Segway OC initial meetup with Jim and whoever else shows up?

My notes say June 14, but I don't see anything more definitive.

i am still available but so far looks like there has not been any real interest from anyone besides you and myself so i sort just left it alone and wait until the 4th of july parade. I mean i am still very into it but just have not seen that anyone else is. I got private pms telling me that david sie is already doing this etc and your the new guy on the block so to be honest i just sort of let it go.

I would be glad to meet up and go for a glide thats for sure.

Any particular ride you'd like to do or place you'd like to explore?

Here (http://web.mac.com/pquade/SoCalSeg/SoCalRides.html)'s a list of a few of mine.
