Hi folks,

I'm currently doing some research on the viability of Segways in Switzerland, but so far I've been unable to find any information on whether Segways can be legally used in the bicycle lane (the fact that I speak neither of the local languages doesn't help either since I can't find any relevant legislation).

Since I know there are some Swiss Segway users here, I was wondering if anyone would enlighten me on whether Segways can be used on the bicycle lane?

Thanks in advance,
George

The i2 is legal on Swiss roads with the official Segway Road Kit. Speed has to be limited to 15 km/h and a license plate (which includes insurance) is necessary. The yellow license plate is the same as for small motorbikes, to get such a license plate, also a driver's license cat. A1 is needed. Also, technically, you are not allowed to use the Segway on sidewalks or bike lanes.

The Road Kit costs CHF 750.--!!! :-o

Pre-i2 models are not legal (yet?).

More info on www.segway.ch

BTW: There is a Seg Polo Club near Geneva, maybe they can give you more informations as well:

Only the i2 is approved for road use in Switzerland. No sidewalks or bike lanes. The x2 is currently going through the approval process. All pre-i2s are currently not approved. I have asked the Swiss road authorities whether handicapped people may use the Segway i180 (model used by my wife) as a mobility device on sidewalks.
