I asked the dealer where I bought my i2 from about getting a few extra tire tubes for my Segway just in case I hit a nail. The dealer, Segway of Los Angeles, has been really great to work with so far and I believe that they are honest and fun people in general. I must say that I had a little sticker shock with they emailed me with this information:

"I just went into the system to check the tube pricing, which is 69.95 per tube. During the check I had noticed that the individual tire price has gone up to 199.95 per tire. My apologies, I had quoted you the price listed in our system, which obviously needs to be updated. "

The tires are $200 each, which is high but I guess I can stomach [it seems that these are special tires made to Segway's specs, so I can sort of understand the expense in that]. On the other hand, when I think about a tire tube being $70 each I am a little baffled. It's not like these are some very rare and expensive tubes - they are similar to what small dirt bikes use. I would really like to buy factory replacement parts for basic items on the scooter [batteries, tires, etc.] so that I can be sure that the mission-critical parts are up to spec. Nonetheless, I don't feel comfortable paying $70 for a tire tube.

Any thoughts as to why these tubes are so expensive? Thanks.

you need to call back your dealer - $70 is the pricing for five tubes. tubes are $14/each.

And the pricing for the tires is also for a qty of 5 -- $39.95 ea. Didn't somebody previously provide you with the tube price in a previous thread?

Thanks, Nora, for confirming.

Someone provided me with the price they got - but that does not really matter if my dealer is charging something different. Thanks for the help guys. I will call Segway of LA up tomorrow and try to get this sorted out.

They sell tires to dealers 5 at a time? Seems a bit odd for a machine with an even number of wheels... you'd think lots of 4 or 6 would be more sensible.

ahh, but if you buy two of them then you have an even number! it's all a part of the plot for world domination, i'm sure of it!

an even number would make a lot more sense for us on the dealer end, but it's easier to count remaining inventory in fives, which i completely understand.

I've never had a customer get 2 flats at the same time. They all just go in a big stack anyway. My never-ending room of boxes that are falling over!!! I hate that room.

Well...I had them check two more times on the price of the tires and tubes, as well as speak with the owner, and they are maintaining that those prices are correct. They actually suggested I buy the tires and tubes elsewhere if I could find those good prices [in a nice way - not being rude].

Well guess I'll be buying tubes from another dealer. Thanks

If you are planning on attending the Segway OC picnic, you could probably pay by credit card on the phone and ask Jim or Dick to bring it with them to the picnic.

Can anyone chime in on the Slime/Tube combo?

I'm only good for the Slime/Tubless setup.

And if you are at the picnic and get a flat, I'll show you how to fix it.

Sure, Dave. I tried it and it worked only as a temporary fix for me with the tube -- it continued to lose air under use. I have my guesses as to what was happening inside, but since it was a week after purchase and the tire also had a piece of wood molded into it, INC sent a replacement wheel. I think Slime is great for tubless tires, but not my choice for tubed tires.

is nothing but a total mess

Slime works in a tubless tire, not in a tube. Kind of like stepping on a tube of toothpaste, the stuff inside just goes everywhere.

I am not sure what difference it makes, but they make a slime specifically for tubes (and therefore a different one for tubeless.)

I have both. Haven't used much. Can't remember which. But the real issue is I haven't taken any apart after using it.

Just checking...

I had a flat on a tubed tire (bicycle) and had to add some water to get the slime reactivated. One I aired up it seemed to hold. I'll see how long it lasts.

I put 10 ozs. of slime(the type for tubes) in each of my tube type tires after 2000 miles..I was in Quartsite,Az. and there are all kinds of thorns and junk in the area..About two weeks later on a sidewalk in Phoenix. I ran over a the biggest thorn I've ever seen. It was as big as a finishing nail. I pulled it out and a little bead of green came out the hole..The next morning I went to check the air pressure and it had not lost any air pressure...Last week I ran over a heel of a womans shoe It had 3 small nails in it. 2 nails penetrated the tire.. I pulled the heel w/nails out of the tire..2 beads of slime also showed up and I've not had to add air and that was 300 or 400 miles ago... I'm sure if I disasible my tires it will be messy...Someone told me that they have trouble with slime out here in the desert, because of the heat..I have not felt any problem with it settling after parking in the heat..I will put slime in my new tires after I put another 200 miles on these...
