View Full Version : Some photos and a question
Here are some photos from yesterday's journey on the hills. This is the first time I have taken Beary (my dog) with me and the Seg.
to those interested, a link to a gallery dedicated to Beary:

Now for the question:
I have lately encountered a problem resembling (partially) the cold battery start issue. It is indeed quite cold here these last days, and I have had problems in two occasions starting my X2. The difference is, that I started the seg alright, left it working for a couple of minutes, then shut it down. Then, after a while it wouldn't start. I plugged it in the electricity (luckily I had one around..) for a few seconds, pulled it out and then it could be started again. Is this a cold battery issue ?

From your description, it seems to be what others have said was the cold start, battery problem. Your solution seems to be the accepted one.
As far as this topic in general, I rarely turn my seg off while on trips. If I go into a store without it, I have it in lock mode. If I have my e-167, I leave it in electronic park mode.
If either of these had to do this for an hour, it would not take a significant amount of energy.
A thought... In the early days of NiMH, we used to unsulate the batteries from the cold to increase their distance. If you used a thin thermal blanket, it stopped them from getting too cold, and those batteries saw a significant drop in range if they wer allowed to air cool too much.
I wonder if a thermal blanket (I made mine from small bubble bubblewrap and some aluminium foil) would keep the LiIons warm enough, (they generate heat when in use) to avoid this problem. A well designed but simple and thin thermal blanket may be an effective go-around for those who see this problem a lot...

This seems to describe what I have experienced- failure to start after parking at low temperature, starting after plugging in for a short time. How cold was it?

I commuted on NiMH, but always less than 5 miles. I definitely noticed how the early morning cold shortened the range substantially. BTW this is one reason I held off so long in getting Li-Ions. Even with the cold, I never could build a case for getting them.
Now that I play polo up here in NorCal, I drain my Li-Ions every match. I guess we never got so serious in SoCal that I'd push Eeyore hard all game.
