Just had to state what seems to be obvious to all of us, but not INC. Here we have a week long look into 'how to be green" or greener and so far I can not find any reference to Segway in any previews, adverts, or on NBC's website for green alternatives. Maybe I'm wrong and there is a whole segment or at least some ad on "the last mile". But I suspect we have yet another missed opportunity to get the story out... Well there are two other networks that are going to have to respond with their own version, so maybe INC will wake-up before then.

I dunno. I'm not really certain that the entire concept of the Segway device holds up under "green" scrutiny very well.
Sure it -sounds- like a good idea, but unless you're -completely- replacing your gas-hog with the device, I think it takes a heck of a lot longer for it to break even on the full spectrum of "green" issues than most people would assume.
Understand that I think the device is interesting and even used one this last summer for commuting, but over the course of the entire summer I continually questioned the choice as actually being the "best" option considering a number of criteria. I think the device fits in a very grey area when it comes to actually being all that "green".

Maybe it does, maybe not..... But Segway has missed (again) their chance to put their spin on it.....

Quade,
"Green" return on investment is dependent on one's usage and perceptions.
I save between $200 and $220 on gas each month, just from gliding to and from work, to and from meetings, and my normal errands. This was measured by gas savings only and using our cost of $2.17 for premium. (I know, this isn't green but read on)
The direct result of the above savings and not using my truck or car for those trips is that I'm eliminating xx pounds of carbon emissions each month. THIS is a green factor.
If we use the lower number, I will have paid off my Segway in 3 years even if I factor in the additional cost of the electricity for charging it.
Of course, since my vehicles will last longer and I will have lower costs of maintenance, then my actual return on investment is lower.
I, for one, can understand the green nature of the Segway very easily but each person has to weigh this for themselves.

For me, walking to light-rail is out of the question so it's either drive my truck to light-rail and park (1.5 miles), or just drive all the way to work (15 miles).
So instead of using my truck I Segway to light-rail.
Seems pretty green to me :)
