Recently, I was at Kinkos and priced a EPAMD placard, similar to the Handicapped-parking mirror hanger. They were a little expensive.

Also, I wanted to have the base in red and the lettering in white, with a seg-symbol. There are web-based companies that make them.

Anyone have any ideas, I'll be glad to listen. Maybe something is already available.

Thanks,

SegDog

SegDogI'm not familiar with the placards you describe, but, can you tell us where you are located (you have not put that info in your profile) and what is to be gained by placing such a placard on a Segway in your state? If it looks anything like the temporary disabled DMV placards here in CA, I'd kinda fear I'd be perceived as trying to fool people into thinking it was a disabled placard.

A number of my friends have mobility problems, but do not meet the criteria for HP Parking permits. So that's not the issue.

For what it's worth, I was thinking that the placard would be more instructional rather than feigning a disability. How many times have you seen a person park in the blue, parking slot; run in the package store, come-out with a case of Bud on each shoulder, and jump back in their SUV; NOT being judgemental. This isn't what I was planning. Just a little courtesy.

The placard is not what allows parking--it's the disability. The placard is just a bureaucratic attempt to identify who has the disability. If you use a placard and are not disabled (borrow your wife's, etc) then you are in violation.

The point of getting a placard made up which identifies your Segway as a machine which could be an EPAND if a disabled person were aboard strikes me as similar to a person putting a Chevy sticker on their Chevy.

I have an automobile license which allows me to park free of charge at parking meters in a number of municipalities. But my wife, driving the same car, has to pay. Now as a practical matter that distinction is difficult to enforce but I consider the whole thing a privilege and I have asked my wife to pay for parking and not to use the handicapped placard if I am not in the car.

...And I wish to stay married.

Isn't a Segway placard enough?

A red placard with the wheelchair is a temporary handicapped placard which will expire in the near future. Putting a Segway symbol on a red placard might be considered an attempt to circumvent the law. Incidently, a number of jurisdictions have special enforcement officers to write tickets for those who abuse the handicapped parking spaces--usually handicapped people. They will ask to see your Individual Disabilities Parking Privilege Permit which has your placard numbers and license number on it. The placard itself is not sufficient.

Considering the difficulties we sometimes have getting access to malls and public places, I cannot endorse a "half-way but not quite" placard. Maybe after we gain unquestioned acceptance for handicapped gliders, but we aren't there yet.

EPAMD as a class of legitimate transportation, should be promoted just as much as the device itself, IMHO. Otherwise, people don't get the whole picture of the Segway as a useful mobility tool. I say, put that word out in public view, instead of hiding it in little understood state or municiple motor code.

GREEN would be a far better background color for the placard. That color is often associated with eco-friendly devices or products, and will be less likely confused with any other type of informational signage.

I am handicapped with emphysema and walking is limited. So I do have a Disability placard on the front of my Segway.

the true meaning of what I was trying to accomplish. Working with the disabled is frustrating because I (we) get to hear their complaints and am, often, embarrassed to be lumped-in with the "normals" doing the discriminating.

Green is a fabulous suggestion. The other colors were chosen by a disabled person, and like most disabled are "trusting and accepting", and this will be a good choice for all. Hopefully, no one will come forth and find green offensive.

Now, to find a decent manufacturer and get a couple samples.

A red placard with the wheelchair is a temporary handicapped placard which will expire in the near future....

Yet, here in AZ, that's not the case. All regular handicapped placards are blue and have an expiration date. Permanent disabilities are reflected with a 10 year expiration date, and renewal is automatic.

In AZ, red handicapped placards indicate public safety personnel - firepersons, public safety workers, etc. - who were disabled in the line of duty, as I understand it.

Some states use Red for temporary handicapped, I think all states and Canada use the blue, it is highly recognized.
