We are heading to Palm Springs, California after Christmas and are trying to decide whether or not to drive and take our 2 Segs or to fly and then rent a car when we get there. We live in Fresno, CA which is about a 7 hour drive from Palm Springs but it would be worth it if there was some great Segging to be found in the area.

My question is: Has anyone else out there explored Palm Springs on their Segway? We have not been in that area for a very long time and are wondering if there is a friendly downtown area to explore or are there any nice nature paths or scenic areas that we can glide around in.

I really appreciate all of your ideas.

. . . .

Follow up note . . . This forum should develop a special travel section which is dedicated to experiences from our members about places that they have Segged in that they did (or did not) have a positive experience in. The really wonderful part of the Segway is that you can get to places and see things that you just can't while walking, biking or driving.

I've done a little glidding there. I'm down there one or two times a month.

The first thing that catches your attention is the lack of curb cuts in some areas. It's interesting that a community that one thinks of as an older persons community doesn't have better curb cuts.

I have talked to the police there and they don't really know much about Segways and didn't seem to care much.

There is a street called El Paseo that Segways are not allowed on. I believe it's in Palm Desert, not sure. All the expensive stores are there. Some good restaraunts also, which is too bad.

There used to be a Seg dealership in Palm Desert, Hwy 111, that did tours but I was there last week and they're gone. I noticed their kickstand is still for sale on eBay though.

Thursday night they have a street fair on Hwy 111 in downtown Palm Spring which is fun to glide but there isn't a lot more than that. I'm not sure I'd spend a lot more money hauling Segways there but it could be interesting to you one.

I've not had any problems there so I would say it's Seg friendly. Now that I think about it, no one has ever said anything negative to me there.

I've never been there, but I recently worked on a book about a celebrity who has a star on Palm Springs' Walk of Stars on Palm Canyon Drive. There are apparently 250 stars in the sidewalk similar to Hollywood's.

Check out:

Palm Canyon Drive (http://www.palmsprings.com/palmcyn.html) and

Palm Springs Walk of Stars (http://www.palmsprings.com/stars/)

Assuming Segways are welcome on this stretch and if you're interested in all the memorabilia, gliding along that street might be a good way to cover more of it while you're there.

If you're the roaming type, I'd recommend checking out Idylwild up in the San Jacinto mountains to the west of PS. Rt 74, as I recall takes you up through some beautiful country on the way. You pick it up off of 111 in Palm Desert.

Also, check out the PS Aerial Tram (http://www.pstramway.com/)

I've been visiting Palm Springs in the RV more during the past year, and always have a Segway with me. It's perfect for getting around downtown Palm Springs - no problems at all.

However, I often want to travel from downtown up highway 111 to the Cathedral City area, and this presents some problems. As previously mentioned there are random areas without curb cuts. Also, there are random areas where the sidewalk disappears and the only options are: dirt shoulder, edge of highway, or cross the street. I don't recommend the first 2 options, but interestingly it seems that if a sidewalk discontinues on the side you are on, there is a sidwalk on the other side of the street. Crossing in these areas can be a challenge however, depending on traffic and the proximity of a controlled intersection. I'm fairly sure that if I try it a few more times I will be able to determine the best sides to glide with the best places to cross and continue, but so far it has been hit & miss. If you are traveling this route at night, be sure to have a strong headlight, as there are stretches with very poor lighting.

Lately I've discovered that the local "Sun Bus" is a good way to get up & down 111 if you don't want to take the car (or in my case I don't have one when I'm in the RV), if you are travelling during the bus's hours of operation.
