Well, if the DHL tracking website has any amount of accuracy to it, I should be able to add my little "HT owner icon" to my profile sometime tomorrow.

My questions are; During training, the instructors said as soon as I get my Segway, I should plug it in and charge it for 12 hours. the first ride should drain the HT to 50% power then charge for another 12 hours. They told me to repeat this cycle 5 times. The way they were saying this seemed like it was an ammendment to instructions that were included with the machine.

Is this correct? I thought that Nic-Hydride batteries didn't have any memory and conditioning was not an issue. Am I mistaken?

Has everyone been informed that this is the correct break-in procedure?

How long will 50% of the power give me if I just mess around on the black key?

Oh, and also I have heard many people stating that thier machine came charged up from the factory. Is this true or could the high initial readings be due to surface charge from the battery sitting idle during shipping?

Thanks for any info.

ian-

what i would do, is charge your ht for 12 hours once you get it and call tech support, just to confirm. with my ht, i plugged it in for 12 hours, then after than i guess i went down to 50% for a few times and did the 12 hour thing, but at the time-- that wasn't part of what we were told and i'm pretty sure it didn't make a difference (as far as i can tell that is).

cheers,

By the time my Segway came (after the 11/20 early delivery group) we were given the directions for the 12 hour charge, and then no more than (gads, I can't remember exactly) 50%? down before recharging. Given that I was out of town when mine came, and didn't get back until the evening of the day I returned, the overnight charge was no problem. Then the weather was cold, etc., so not overusing the unit was also no problem <G>. But I can understand how tempting it would be to want to run with it. I'm sure that Segway had a reason for changing the directions - maybe some of the early industrial users were running their units all the way down right away and it affected how much of a charge they could hold. I don't know. One thing I have experienced, though, is that Segway tends to be cautious, or ummmmmmm, optimal, in their directions. So, if they say to follow a certain trend for charging in the beginning, it's because they want to be absolutely SURE that you get the best usage from the batteries. As pt says, you could probably do it "less" - but you can be sure that you will get the optmimal usage (I believe) following the directions.

There's a separate paper in the box with the latest charging instructions. It takes about 5 days to treat/break in the batteries (for max life).
