Has anyone had any damage to their Segway when it was received by DHL Express?

I believe because Segway doesn't put "Fragile" or "This Side Up" or "Do Not Stack" on the shipping carton that the Segway arrives in fine shape. ;)
the ht is meant to be "abused" a trip from dhl won't do a thing. i've put 500 miles on mine--banged, dropped, rained on...it's a very durable machine, at least it has been for me.
cheers,

My guide today at the training session was Stefan, who told us that he was the person who designed the shipping carton for the HT. He strongly suggested that we keep the box and use it whenever we need to ship the unit, such as on airplane (as baggage; if you're flying on a small commmuter plan, be sure to call ahead and give them the dimensions and weight so that they can make room for it.)
He pointed out that there is some 30 pounds worth of packing material in the box because Segway did a bunch of tests sending a g-meter through DHL/Fedex shipping, and found that by the end of the trip the box had experienced up to NINE Gs! As a result, the box is unbelievably sturdy and overdesigned, so I'd be very surprised if any Segways get damaged in transit.

Those big rubber tires have got to help some too!

The only shipping "damage" problem I have experienced myself and heard about from others is the screw for the control stick clamp falling out.
I was very upset that I thought I broke my Segway during assembly when I could not screw the clamp tight. After further inspection, I realized the screw was missing. I got lucky in that it was hiding under the flap in the bottom of the box. At least one other person was not so lucky and had to purchase a replacement screw himself.

Is the O-ring between the control stick and base supposed to be visible after assembly? I think it is, but I thought that O-rings were usually seated in a grove so that the surfaces could mate. This arrangement doesn't seem as though it will give a good water-tight seal. Are you supposed to try to compress the O-ring?

Yes, you are supposed to compress the O-ring while you tighten the clamp screw. But the O-ring will not dissappear in the grove. The instructions don't make a big deal about how much to compress, so I assume that as much as you can without going out of your way to smash it. The seal does not have to be waterproof as in going underwater, just weatherproof while being splashed. I am sure that with a little care and even a small bit of compression, the O-ring will seal just fine.
