View Full Version : rattle sound located in/around wheel

I'm about to voyage forth for my second outing in the world.

But, there is a rattle sound-slight-when I am standing on Seg...or going VERY slowly. If we lay it down and touch the wheel we hear it...as if a fender is rattling (but the sound comes if I touch either wheel and not the fenders). John checked the wheels and they were tight. Since he followed me yesterday in the car he can say that nothing looks amiss.

New England is bumpy and rough and I don't sense any problem but thought someone else might know. It is NOT a severe sound and there is no feel associated with the sound. It's just that I had not heard any sound when I stood still before or crawled at 1/2 mile an hour.

Any guesses? suggestions?
We have a lot of farm machinery (I even have a Kubota with cruise control!) and have an ability to understand danger signs---this does not seem at all a problem. Just a slight rattle.

I’ve noticed a slight rattling with all 3 of the Segway’s I’ve ridden when I’m stopped or traveling very slowly. It sounds like a faint clicking or rattling noise coming from the wheels/base. At orientation, I asked about it. I was told that it’s just a bit of the stick shake mechanism. I’m not sure, Lazarus, if this is what you’re actually hearing or not. If it is, it’s no big deal... it’s normal. Otherwise, I have no idea what it you could be.

It would appear that this is normal and usual. It sounds as if there were a bit of tolerance in the gears or their bearings. I'd wondered about it too, but it seems to only happen when standing still. At least I'm not aware of it when moving.

Linda,

Remember that when it is "standing still" it isn't. The wheels are moving back and forth in an almost imperceptable fashion to keep you balanced. It checks your balance 100 times a second and acts accordingly. It uses much more battery standing still than going 3 mph.

PS, I had to check that Feeding Hills was a real town. We have so many kids, that my home is a feeding house. (Chinese take out was $152 Friday night and it was all gone by lunchtime Saturday.)

Happy gliding,

Fred

when you're going really slow (1 to 2" / sec) those are the gears, it's normal.

cheers,

I get a very faint stick-shake-like rattle noise from the left gear assembly going about 5 mph, once in a while...

Thanks for all the replies. I've been out all day with Seg and I see what everyone is saying. No problem.

Today I was in Northampton MA and I kept meeting people who know me from selling my plants/vegetables at the Farmers' Market there. I think I was promising rides to people if they promised to buy my plants! (only teasing) But we all agreed I would get a lot of attention if I brought my Segway to market.

I got more comfortable going over bumpy areas and got the idea of riding to the Smith College greenhouse. It was a last day of the spring bulb show and was packed with people waiting to get in. Peole actually left their place in line to come over and see 'Linda and her wonderful machine'.

The campus police slowed down and checked me out twice but never bothered me. I did hang my car handicap placard from the front bag so they may have been unsure.

For those of you following the use of Segway for disabled people: I did get very tired and suddenly had trouble standing. But I had been showing off for 90 minutes. So, I'm going to get one of those fold up tripod camping chairs and put it in the front bag...I'll put it right near my handy fold up cane!

Fred--Feeding Hills got its name because cows in a nearby city (Springfield) were brought here to feed every day (in the last century). As my husband and I farm about 10 acres I think it only appropriate we live in Feeding Hills! The name of this town is the only interesting thing about it.

Same deal here, I only hear it in a very quiet environment, and only once in a while. 4Seg gave me the whole tech explanation over the phone, and assured me that it's only the gears doing their job ... just like PT said. :)
