Noticed while using the HT tonight: If in power assist mode and you happen to touch the platform with your foot the HT enters balance mode without using mode button. I suppose it's a safety feature if you ignore instructions and attempt to step on while still in power assist. -- Just an FYI --

Hi Steve! Yeah, I've seen a few other people mention that, and now I must admit that I use that little feature pretty frequently. :)

It only works when the platform is level. It is a very smart safety feature in case you forget to press the mode button.

I have noticed that it only works some of the time... My friend actually got so used to just stepping on in PA mode that the one time that it didn't click over to balance mode, well, he almost fell flat on his face...

I would suggest getting into the habit of clicking the button before you get on...

And sometimes it will go into balance mode, but the platform won't be exactly flat, and the wheels will scoot back to get into balance mode, and you've got one foot on the platform and the other ankle playing "make me a target."

It's a safety feature that can save you from falling if you forget to turn on balance mode. It shouldn't be your primary mode of operation. Use the red button and check that the Segway is really in balance mode by rolling it back and forth, like the video shows.

Good points ... probably best to use the button. Thanks.

Hey Folks!

I almost always use the one foot on to get into the balance mode. I have probably done it over 100 times with no problem (knock on wood). If I have a problem I will let you know. Oh! if the platform is not level I get the frowning red face and have to back off and try again.

I noticed this in training. The Segway trainer had to bring a unit across the room, so she started it up with a key, then simply got on with almost a scooter-like push off. So I tried it in the practice room.

The only thing needed is your awareness of true level of the platform. The push off can help tip you into the glide and you can even start into a turn if you practice it enough. But Gosh help you if you miss the balance mode... Woopsie!
