Great news!!!!! This will definitely pave a way for a wide acceptance of the Segway!

Those comments are alright, but check out the comments in the story itself, it's the usual mix about wasting money, lazy people, dangerous motor vehicle, etc.
Off topic , but I'm posting this from my iphone by the side of a pool in sunny Palm Springs, CA :D.

And there is a Segway is by my side....
Then we could send it on to engadget with a photo and a story about the lux life of I phone users. ;-)

Again, I am too dense to get the point.
I have made many posts from my blackberry over the years. I know that iphone enthusiasts like the user interface better, but what is so different from posting from an iphone as opposed to from a blackberry, a technology that has been around for years?...
Before my company got me that blackberry, I have posted here from poolside from my PDA.
I guess that it is nice to have the new device, and I like toys as much as the next guy, I just don't understand the constant references to the device, as if it is different than another one... Each time I buy a phone or pda or computer, it has better graphics and better user interface.

Karl, he was just sharing a pleasant moment/experience/mood/etc.... It was just an image to close his posting. I don't know why it needed to be analyzed or his sunny day rained upon.

I was jealous he was in Palm Springs - I phone or not.
We were only there once, and it was during a moonsoon, so one of these days I would like to go back and see it when you can lay out by the pool.

So lucky! Though I don't know if I can wait over a year for my contract to expire... There's NO WAYthat I'm going give my cell company more $$$ for NOTHING.

Sal, it's NOT for nothing by a long shot.
I love my iPhone, too. It's not just another phone. It truly is synergistic because of its multi-functions, and we all have yet to see what more it will become over the short and long term.
I have mine with me all the time, and because of that and its strong capabilities, it has earned an important place in my daily life.
Penny-wise and pound foolish is a saying you might consider.
I could easily have typed this on my iPhone had I not already been sitting at my Mac and wanted to respond quickly.

Karl wasn't dumping on anyone. He was sincerely curious.
Karl, it's easy to say and perhaps a little difficult to do, to actually TRY an iPhone. It may not do just everything a PDA does, and thumbtypists may miss their "chicklets" keyboards, but the iPhone's display is simply gorgeous, it's the best iPod ever made, and it's got a full-featured internet browser.
I don't really have any complaints about AT&T's service or the speed of the EDGE network, either. I just think it's great to get e-mail wherever I am, and to have my music automatically stopped for a received call.
Perhaps it's somewhat a set of considerations comparable to the eternal Mac/PC debate. If you don't see the difference, or if you don't like the soft keyboard, for example, then it's a moot point of how great the iPhone is.
We've moved to iPhones, so I'm going to move this thread to off-topic.

Thank you Dan. I was not complaining, just asking. YOu have me pegged dead on. I do not understand the big deal between Mac and PC either. I use PCs, but when I have used macs (other people's, I have never owned one or professionally used one in business, but my sister has one and I have spent a bit of time on hers while visiting her in a neighboring state) and I don't get the emotional connection...
Quite possibly it is because I work professionally with several different computer controlled devices, and am required to troubleshoot and repair all manner of different User interfaces and computer control devices for the various manufacturers. Most of my professional computer experience is for propriatary software, and proriaritary platforms, so moving from format to format, chip to chip, system to system is 2nd nature. I have some that I appreciate more than others, but that has to do with their self diagnostic capacities, as well as the bugs or lack of them...
Anyway, for me a computer is a computer, and all I care about is getting the job done, or getting to a particular point, I do not care as much as others about many of the details that seem to be important...
This is also the same for my cars. And my yard. And most of the other aspects of my life... I am sooo not conserned with how other people choose to deal with the appearance of stuff in my life, that it sometimes confuses me when people act as if the image is the same as the substance.

That's cool, man. A foible here and there doesn't detract from the overall shine. ;-)
It think it was Meis van der Rohe (http://mies.iit.edu/) who was noted for saying "God is in the details."
To me, this has to do with aesthetics, which are nothing if not subjective considerations about beauty.
I think beauty belongs everywhere. I heard that Rolls-Royce mechanics used to take care to tighten bolts so that those in a row had each of their hex heads aligned at precisely the same angle.
I happily don't have to have anything but Macs in my space, and would be hard pressed to tolerate any Windoze junk inside the walls of that space for any longer than was absolutely necessary.
I strongly object to this distinct LACK of aesthetics in either hardware or software in the Windoze world.
Just an opinion, but an important one for me.

It used to be FORD vs Chevy vs MOPAR, now Mac vs PC vs Open Source
I would venture to guess you did not get the Ford vs Chevy, etc ether.

I love the old muscle cars, but I understand because I go where I like... I had my '68 mopar with the 440 for more than 25 years. Also, a 64 1/2 Mustang coup, a 68 Firebird convertable, my 86 Mustang GT is not quite in the same catagory, but man that thing was fast...
You are right. I was all over the place. I like fords and say so, but have had better luck with GM. My Eldorado was better than my Mark, my Bonnie SSE was a nice car, as is my Buick Rendezvous, but it is too boring. I will have to go back to a ford ragtop...
Who knows, maybe it is time to try a nameplate other than the US makers... BMW, Saab? I suspect that within a few months I'll be back in a ragtop...Although I also suspect that I will stay in this country.
I have no brand loyalty, but I do look at the country of origin.

We should count ourselves lucky that the Koreans have only got as far as prototyping self-balancing scooters (and didn't beat Dean to the punch)! 8^) 8^) 8^)

Simple. Karl, I'm glad we have you in our community. If the Koreans had produced their prototype of a "self balancing" scooter say 10 years ago, you may have never bought one. And we'd as a community would be poorer without your advice, suggestions and innovation.
Thankfully, an American created the Segway (and brought it to market), so we do have you among our ranks!
ps - The joke is mostly about how the speed of innovation in different cultures might dictate our actions and who we associate with. For some reason, I think that serendipity is funny.

I am not too familiar with the VW GTI convertable, but way back in the stone age, when I lived in Germany for a few years, the Golf was very popular, and it is not my cup of tea. Too small for me, even though it is a nice car...

The Gen V golf is much bigger than the one in the old days... and you dunno nothin' till you try it!
Its plenty big and the i2 fits in the trunk just perfect.
PS - a Saab is just a Ford in disguise.

I make an off-handed remark about my new phone, and it evolves into comparing foreign and domestic automobiles :D. I was in Palm Springs as part of a convention for my fraternity, it was all pretty cool.
I went for a walk one morning and happened upon Segway of the Desert, the local dealer. They had a sign on their door saying they were closed for the months of July and August, most likely because it was too hot to do tours. This was the 2nd time I've visited a dealer to find them closed because the conditions weren't optimal for tours, even though their posted hours say they should be open. Inside they had a single i170 on display and various parts and accessories haphazardly scattered about, typical for the Segway dealerships I've been to.
