View Full Version : Best tire for SOFT sand???

Hey.......I've seached the forum for this... couldn't find a proper answer.

Golf vs. Standard x2 Tire.......... Has anyone actually TRIED the wider profile, softer golf tire on soft sand?

Steven-in-the-Desert :-] ... might you know, perhaps?
I've never been to the Land of Turbans...... but possibly you play golf and have taken a joy ride into one of the sand traps after an errant shot?

Moreover, I'm wondering about the durability of the Golf tire over a period of time that would involve mostly hard-packed, but 25% soft sand usage.
(Obviously the standard x2 tire is more durable but I'm wondering how much more durable.... if anyone would hazard a guess?)

Thanks,
Michael

Be careful Michael, the sand on our coast is much powderier (is that a word?) than it looks - even with my Cheng Shen tires (albeit on an i167) the handful of times I attempted to glide on sand I had spinouts and slippage from the traction control going bonkers. And every since the first time I can't seem to get all the grit out and there is an incessant grinding noise. Don't you guys get those cool ATVs?

Yeah Bill, the ATVs work fine BUT................ I must see if I can find a "proper" beach tire for the x2.
I did bring the i2 over the soft sand... so I know what you're saying. Same thing you mentioned but..... there must be a "best tire" fit??
Actually, the soft part is really only about 10% of the distance, but nevertheless has to be crossed.
Bummer!
Thanks (once again) for your input.

Michael

I'd choose "powdery"

eww now I can't get the mental image of hasselhoff in his red suit gliding down south beach kicking up a wake of sand.

Seriously though look for the Interco SuperSwamper TrXus STS, they are 7" wide but I can't find them in 10" diameter - my neighbor has them on a 4x4 in the 15" diameter variety and they are very aggressive (see pic)

Hay Michael, I have an XT that I have taken to the beach in South Florida. And it rides very will on the sand. It rides better on the hard sand near the break then the lose sand. But in the lose sand I had no trouble getting right though it. Most of the time I'm on the streets and sidewalks and I see very little ware on the tires. So in my opinion the XT is the way to go for you.

Thanks too for the info.
Aren't the XT tires the same that are on the stock x2?
... Obviously, it seems the wider... the softer... (= greater traction) the better.
And yeah, the hard-packed sand doesn't really seem to pose much threat... it's the soft **** that more easily = faceplant.

Soft sand we have....but the bucketload!.

x2T is the best of the three tire sets to use in any type of sand, and by a long shot. Much better control of spinouts and a very easy glide.

I use the i2 and x2T regularly on the soft sand and while you always have to pay more attention they are both fun to us!

Bill,
The Segway Golf tires are actually 8" wide.
.....And for anybody that's REALLY interested in sand traction, here's a great article:

Steven,
...Forgive my ignorance but....... x2T? --- Is that the Segway's standard Golf tire?
