Sunday, August 12, 2008, I plan on doing a little site survey of some bike trails in the Irvine area. Anybody that would like to come along is welcome!

My plan is to start at the Metrolink station (approximately Edinger and Jamboree), hop over to a river trail nearby, up another bike trail, across to the Ruby's we stopped at last weekend, up another bike trail, have a short section of Class II bike path and then hop one more bike trail back to the MetroLink station. The majority of the trail should be nice Class I bike path. Looks to be about 13 miles total. I'll be stopping periodically to take photos to document the quality of the trails and views. I'll also probably be stopping for lunch at Ruby's.

I'll be arriving and setting up about 9:30 am.

Wheels rolling at 10 am.

Enclosed is the route. Route will go counterclockwise around the loop.

33°42'25.02"N
117°48'18.06"W

What's wierd is I've looked it up on maps.google.com and it doesn't show the Metro station, but I can absolutely guarantee it exists! See; Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tustin_(Metrolink_station))

I'm probably up for that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the start must be the Santa Ana Metrolink station (or does Irvine have two stations), not the Irvine station at Barranca and Ada. If I hadn't checked the route, I'd have gone to the wrong place. Are you posting on Seg OC as well?

Ah, serves me right for not knowing what the Metrolink stations are called I guess. The one I'd want to start from is approximately Edinger and Jamboree.

Looks like this one is actually called the Tustin Metrolink Station. Did I mention it's a site survey? I'm not exactly certain things are what they say they are on maps and satellite photos so I'm going to check it out. (Technically, this is called "ground proofing".) By definition, I don't exactly know what I'm doing. :D Join me at your own peril! Beyond here . . . there be dragons!

(Posting to Seg OC, now with improved information!)

I wonder how it'd be as a night glide, with dinner at Ruby's?

Just got back! Woot! Had a great time with John, Frank and David.

Would make a fairly nice night ride as it's 99% Class 1 bike path. For a night ride you'd want good front lighting as parts of the trail wouldn't have any lighting.

Based on today's site survey of the route, I'm going to change the rally point to a nearby park and a couple of other minor things. My original rally point was the Metrolink station and, as it turns out, there's a MUCH better place to do this not very far away.

It was great fun, but I thought it was a bit scary when you arranged for a genuine coroner to join us en-route.:)

Re the night ride, we could substitute the sidewalks for the "jungle" section.

I suppose . . . but where's the adventure in that? :)

Flip side, it now occurs to me that vast sections of this might be "closed" at night. In particular, William R Mason Park (http://www.ocparks.com/masonpark/default.asp?Show=LocationHours).

John -- What was the name of the park north of Edinger? It's not on the Google Earth site.

If you are talking about the proposed assembly site, it is Deerfield Community Park at Deerwood and Irvine Center Dr (which turns into Edinger).

What about bike path to Shady Canyon before it closes at dusk, the loop back through Wm Mason Park and the jungle to the footbridge over I405 and then the bike path back to Ruby's and then back to the park. The start could be either Windrow or Deefield Park.

Well, for that matter it could start/finish at any one of a number of locations, including the parking lot at Ruby's!

Sandy and I wish we could have joined you all today for your glide! You can count us in on the next one. Did anyone take any images from today's glide?

Missed you guys but we were having too much fun to take pictures. David did introduce us to geocaching but I was running out of juice and we saved our first "find" for the next ride.

I was going to stop every 1/2 mile or so and take photos, but with as many as we had, I felt it would have ruined the flow. I'll do a solo ride in the future and document the route.

Enclosed is the ground proofed route starting and ending at Ruby's. It could just as easily start and end any one of a number of places along it.

What is nice about it is that it forms a vague figure 8 when superimposed over the Shady Canyon route and now provides us with a bunch of options to mix and match. For instance, we could have a 16ish mile ride by combining the perimeter sections of both.

If you feel like trying a night glide in the next day or two, I'm game.
My wife is on a business trip, and I don't feel like cooking, so any excuse to glide it good for me.

As for Parks like Mason, they close at 9pm.
I figure if we get started around 6ish we won't wind up eating really late, and probably won't run into any problems with closing parks. If a bike trail runs through the park, I don't think using it after the park closes would be that big of a deal, but we can always check it out during the glide.
How long did the glide take?
If you're game (mon, tue, or wed night), let me know.

I'm in! Tues or Wed. What about:
Windrow Park start,
Bike trail to Sand Canyon and up into Shady Canyon
Culver to Harvard
Harvard to Mason Park bike trail. This portion we haven't checked out but it puts us in position to do the twisty trail through the west end of the park, and sidewalks are obvious in satellite view except for last couple blocks where there is probably a bike lane if there really is no sidewalk. Through the jungle back to footbridge over 405 and trail back to Park

If you particularly wanted Ruby's, we could just pass Windrow, stay on the trail for 10 minutes and we'd be there. Then ten minutes back to the park after dinner. I'm fearful that parking in the lot at Ruby's and unloading the Segs might get the cars towed -- I'm only guessing they have signs saying their limited parking is for patrons only and they wouldn't know our plans to return and eat.

Dark humor! Hey you started it with the "Missing Man" formation comment! (That's normally not simply somebody that is "missing" but rather dead.)

I'd love to go to the next one, but it is a bit too far for me to drive. :(So, you think the drive distance will shrink by the time of the next ride? Isn't that what you said for July 1, July 4, and Aug 11? Just kidding -- that drive on a week night is ridiculous; we'll eventually convince you and Bystander and Segsby and Carlos to join us.

Ok, I'm up for ruby's on Wed night. See you at the park!
What's a good time, 7:00?

I have to go to torrance this afternoon, so I'm doing a night glide in long beach on the way home.

I'll probably do the bixby/pike run and get me some buffalo wings!:D

That will make for a pretty late dinner. Was your intent to test our lighting after dark, or is it just the earliest comfortable meeting time? I'd prefer 6:00 but if you and Greg prefer 7:00, I'm good to go.

Maybe you'll see Pete or Sharon in LB tonight.

If we start at 6:00, we should be at dinner before it's too dark and certainly on bikepaths. I have both a front and rear light for you but you'll have to hang the rear light on your pants pocket (like I do), unless you picked up a lower cargo kit; both front and rear are looking for a small diameter tube. The front light would be held in place by your thumb since it will barely fit around the grip (again unless you have the lower cargo kit.

Your other option is to go to Performance and pick up a NiteRider Flight right now.

Sounds like 6:00 at Windrow unless Dave runs into problems. I'll get there a few minutes early; I just found a way to temporarily mount the light on the handle of your bag.

Unfortunately, less than a day's notice is not enough for me to arrange leaving work early (I usually work until 6:30).

But, hope to see everyone at the next glide...

Pete,

I don't know if you are talking about my suggestion that Dave look for you in LB tonight or whether you are talking about tomorrow. If tomorrow, didn't you see Dave's post on Sunday night asking if anyone was interested in a Mon, Tues, or Wed night ride? Are you sure you don't feel a bit of a cold coming on that might require that you leave work a bit early tomorrow? If we could get Marty there, we could even get you a doctor's note.
