View Full Version : i2 Parking Stand

As some of you may remember I had a big mess with the local dealer trying to sell me a speed limited i2 (to meet the Segway regulation in Israel).
I am happy to report that after a wait of almost a year and some exchanges with the dealer I finally got my i2 yesterday – no speed limit, two infokeys, commuter package and the works!
When ordering the machine close to its announcement the parking stand was quoted as part of the Commuter package. When I got the machine it was not included. I looked at the Segway Inc site and while some of the pictures do show the stand it is not in the list of items in the Commuter package. Neither is it available separately.
I read through the forum and understand there were some problems with the stand but I am not clear on the whole situation. Some guys proposed foam blocks and other workarounds but the lack of a proper integrated stand was readily clear after only a few hours of i2 glides on errands around the city.
What is the current status?

The current status is there is NO stand available from Segway.
Several designs have been made by various users; some good, some not so good, some potentially dangerous. None are exactly what you'd want in a machine that costs as much as they do. Let me repeat that; NONE. Do some of them work? Well yeah, but do they actually look as if they belong on the machine? Uh . . . no.
Ironic that such a technologically advanced company can't come up with something as basic as a stand.
And some people actually wonder why Segways haven't caught on with the masses. Segway Inc. has brilliant grand ideas, but completely overlooks some of the most basic things. Pity.

What's wrong with the one that was originally shown at the i2 launch?

I don't exactly know, but what I've heard has something to do with bungy cords and the possibility of people's fingers getting chopped off.
All in all, sounds like they actually made the right decision to pull that particular stand off the market, but it's nearly inconceivable to me that they haven't found an in-house solution yet.
Segway actually lost a bit of business in part becuase of this.

Your summary is the current status.
No official word. No planned date of release. No expected date of any announcment of any release. If the dealers know anything concerning this, they probably can't talk about it too much.
I'm still using a gen1, but the hinge / magnet design by itbeme (http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=16135) looks good to me. (Well, it will look better after he paints it.)

See; http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/riverside/20070802-1402-scooters.htmlI saw that.
Ironicly, signonsandiego.com hosts a video recently touted by "the last mile (http://www.segway.com/blog/)" showing some i-180s being used by parking enforcement in Chula Vista.

Back in Riverside, this comment:
"...and we heard from officers in other jurisdictions complaining about ankle fatigue.”
indicates the "officers in other jurisdictions" can't follow instructions concering pushback of the speed limiter. It also indicates that the powers that be in Riverside didn't do their homework.
I suppose now that the RCMP officer broke his ankle recently (in other news), there will be more discussion about this.

I think that the last "official" reply was that it would be out by (the end of) 3rd quarter this year. We're not halfway through the 3rd quarter yet.
As for the problem - I think it has more to do with the stand working w/o any cargo at all vs. 12 or more kgs/side loaded in the lower side bags. The first gen stands were useless when those bags were loaded up.

There are several different after market stands out there...
Each maker of these has their own view of how well they fit the image and machine.
I designed one that I use all the time and like. Others have posted either ones they made or bought, and liked as well.
Each has it's own pro and con. I agree that none are as integrated as the original which really was just a handle (on gen one, all other parts were not visibile) or the bent stainless tube on gen 2 which matched the shape of the leansteer but had spring loaded/weight loading problems...
I am also anxiously awaiting the Segway official parking stand. I do not like to walk around the Segway to put a stand up and down like some being sold.

I can remember, back in school, some of the classroom doors had door stops on them that were spring activated. You stepped down on the stop - which was mounted on the door - to drop the post, then stepped on a little pedal beside the mounting to retract the stop post.
Or maybe they're not made anymore... just did a Google search on spring-activated "door stop" and came up blank....

I have considered those as well, but they only move an inch or so. I would think you need a longer throw than that.
I am still looking for a longer one...

Just thinking out loud here.
Seems to me a push-push cabinet latch, some nested tubing, and a long coil spring could be used to fashion a longer version of the aforementioned door stop.
If only I had a gen2 to experiment on...
But I haven't "used up" my i-167 yet! Can't see clear to replace something that works so well.

Will those of us with i2 commuters get whatever Segway Inc comes up with eventually, as part of our package?

I sent Segway Inc. the following. Will post the reply.
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Yossi Gofman and I live in Israel.
I’ve ordered the i2 from Segway Israel Ltd close to its announcement. At the time I ordered the Commuter package because it was advertised as containing all the components I needed – the handlebar bag, lock, comfort mat and last and most important – the parking stand.
At the time the package was not available. My dealer suggested that I take the i2 and then receive the Commuter package as it becomes available. I declined and informed him I had no trouble waiting for the whole package in full assembled on my machine.
I waited till May 2007 when Segway Israel informed me that the Commuter package is now available but the machine would be delivered with a speed limit due to the Segway regulation in Israel. Again I declined and informed my dealer I have no problem waiting till any such restraints are removed.
A few days ago I received my new i2 with the Commuter package and no limitations whatsoever. The i2 is a great machine and I love it – I am now a proud owner of two Segways – an I180 and the new i2 (not yet registered).
While the i2 is great I was unpleasantly surprised by receiving the Commuter package without the parking stand. This is a real disappointment. Just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things I double checked with your web site, build section (http://www.segway.com/build/main.htm?init=home&i=false&lan=EN&code (http://www.segway.com/build/main.htm?init=home&i=false&lan=EN&code)=) where the Commuter package is indeed shown with a parking stand.
I talked to my dealer and fellow owners at Segwyachat.com and now understand that there were some technical problems with the design so the original parking stand was pulled off the marked and a new design is now being developed.
My question is this: When will a parking stand be available and will it be shipped to me as part of the ordered Commuter package?
Best regards,
Yossi Gofman

A very nicely written letter... Please let us know what response, if any, you get from your efforts.
I think most i2 owners are at the very least, curious about what Segway's official stance on the issue is, after nearly a year...

Yossi,
Are you aware that INC, at some point, announced a $100 reduction of the MSRP of the commuter package and removed the stand? If you purchased before that, and your price was based on the original package price, your dealer owes you the stand. If it was purchased after that time, you are not so entitled. This all assumes that international marketing followed the same route as that within the US. Timing of this can be determined by a search of posts.

Thanks - I wasn't aware of that!
Since the handling of my deal was very unorthodox with a delivery almost a year after ordering I can't really tell what I was charged for and how much. The price here is higher than the US list price so this just compounds the confusion.
Anyway, it’s less about the money and more about the fact that I want to have a stand.
When I ordered it the stand was part of the package. Even now the stand is shown to be a part of the package (see the link I posted). In my country a seller of any goods must ship whatever is shown in his advertisements. Here that's called (in free translation) "fair trade" and there is a law to enforce that. Simply put - what you see is what you get.
So I expect to get the stand or rather a stand - even if I have to add some money to get it.
Regardless of the outcome I also do expect to hear back from INC.

Yossi, if the PRICE was negotiated at the time you ordered and that price remained unchanged, I agree that you are due a stand (at no extra charge). Many of us are in the same situation as yourself, and our dealers still plan to eventually provide us with a stand. We have no argument with them since they can't give us a product that is not yet being produced.
There have been many heated previous threads on this subject, including your pont that INC has refused to update the pictures. I'm sure INC would argue that as of the date of the price decrease (due to the non-availability of the stand), the specifications on what is included in the Commuter package have been clearly listed in the text (now at http://www.segway.com/personal-transporter/model_i2_Commuter.html. You will get no disagreement from me if you say that is a specious argument, but again, I think that is immaterial to you and I as we negotiated a purchase before the items were deleted from the package. In addition to the stand, the picture continues to show the handlebar bumper that was promised as part of the package as well, but most of us have just written off that item. You mention that your purchase was very unorthodox, but you didn't say how and I'm not really asking. I think the primary question is when the pricing was negotiated -- before or after the date when the package was re-defined. If negotiated before, I think it merely muddies the water to bring up the pictures, and gives whomever you ordered from, a point to argue other than WHAT WAS IN THE PACKAGE ON THE DATE YOU CONTRACTED FOR THE PURCHASE.

Strangely, on Inc.'s website they still have pictures of the i2 WITH parking stand. But no possibility to add it in the "Build your Segway" tool.
What happend with the customers that pre-ordered and paid the i2 Commuter, which in the beginning did include the parking stand?

I was also thinking about how nice it would be to have a stand. If Inc doesn't produce one, I was thinking of a design based on a wire hoop rather like the one Inc designed, only instead of sliding down, it would hinge down from a fitting around the medallion socket. It would be relatively easy to design one which would spring out of its hinges if you rode off with it deployed (I nearly said snapped out but after the gen 1 stands that is an inappropriate word). It would be deployed/ retracted using the Mark 1 foot.

EDIT: Okay. It's *really* nice. I'm impressed. They clearly spent a lot of money on the revamp. And I think it helps prospective customers better understand what a Segway is all about. The animations that introduce the machine and different configurations are slick and professional.
Hopefully this revised site helps spur more people to buy units. I will certainly advise people who ask about the machine when I glide, to visit the site now.

I believe it will be released in small quantities around the 15 of Sept. The amount to fulfill all orders late in the month, maybe.
This release probably will a stop gap parking stand, not too impressive.

I would think the key is to have the right expression on the face of the woodchuck at the moment he realizes that he will spend his afterlife holding up SEGsy's seg. The look of amazement and profound joy comming from those beady little eyes, looking out from under your batteries will also help you to win friends and influence people...
Of course, you can use an angry woodchuck head as a potential alternative defense incase your batteries go dead in the stun gun.
Lastly, How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck would chuck wood?
