Ok, so there is an epic thread about alternative tires that can be used on Segways.

Are there any alternative RIMS? Ok, probably not for the older models, but what about something for the i2 or x2?

The reason I ask is that it occurs to me that a second set of wheels and tires is probably not a bad idea. I was thinking of just getting another stock set, but if there is an alternative out there, I'd like to know about it.

I don't have an i2, but last fall at the Segway of Orange county picnic (http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=13832), I met a gentleman who had found some 14 inch rims for an ATV and made a custom adaptor plate. The plate matched the three holes from the PT gearbox to the 4 holes of the ATV rim.

The overall effect was quite interesting, it looked like an x2, but "lowered". Quite an impressive look, in my opinion. Also had the advantage of keeping the stock fenders and having knobbies on a 19" wheel, allowing for i2 use on grass & lite off-road use with normal i2 top speed and without the dangerous reduction of torque. Main disadvantage (if you want look at it like that) was worse ground clearance than a real x2. Probably also had a bit of range loss, but the owner hadn't determined how much / little yet.

I don't believe the gentleman I met that day posts here, but maybe others remember seeing his "lowered" x2 at the picnic. That day was the "field debut" of the x2 for the OC dealer.

I remember it well, and he was nice enough to encourage everybody to try it out. Great alternative to buying a second unit for off road use. Pressure was 4 lbs in the tires, so I'm guessing you are right about the loss of range. Do you think the extra spacing would add any greater tendency to bend the wheel flanges? Could it have been Ari(sp?), who has the 167 with P133 wheels?

Jimbo, do you know who it was? If not, we'll just have to have another picnic.

...Do you think the extra spacing would add any greater tendency to bend the wheel flanges?...

I would speculate that depending whether it was flush mounted and the method of attachment, it may actually re-enforce the gearbox flanges and therefore prevent wheel-wobble.

I seem to recall hearing that some sort of small spacer may have been required to allow the aftermarket ATV rim/wheel to clear the stock i2 fender. I guess it would depend on the profile of the AM rim in question.
