Thought I would finally insure my 4 year old Segway, I have my cars insured with State Farm so I gave them a call. They asked what's a Segway? I said well, you should know, the home office sent me a letter last year stating that it would no longer be covered under my home owners policy, so how much for a seperate policy? We don't know, we will call the home office and call you back. About 30 mins later they called and ask if I were disabled, I said no and thier reply was we will have to call back. 10 mins and another call back. We no longer insure Segways. Does anyone in the Segway world have insurance with State Farm?

"drive" insurance. If you strip away most of the coverage, it can worked down to $80ish bucks a year (for most areas) if your goal is primarily theft.

I have both of mine insured through State Farm. I think it's a recreation vehicle policy (like ATVs & JetSkis).

We no longer insure Segways.

Sounds as if you are not pleased. Any thought of telling them that is an unacceptable answer? I'll bet that your homeowners insurance covers an expensive bike for theft and liability. How about saying at the very least that, "I want all my insurance with one company, so are you saying I need to find a new insurance company?"

I just insured 2 I2's thru Progressive. They have a category for Segways. I got everything except collision for $180.00 per year for both. It included fire and theft, under and uninsured motorists, and medical. It can be done online, just have the serial numbers etc readily available when you start. The price seemed fair for the peace of mind. I like that it is now insured against theft.

I went on their site and put in my zip code. Got a message they no longer sell motorcycle insurance in Massachusetts.

My understanding is that very few people sell insurance in Mass?:)
Something about regulations and requirements?

Has anyone gotten insurance through USAA and if so how did USAA write the policy.

We have all our insurance through USAA so when the Segways came into our lives, we called them. At first they said they were insured under our homeowners, but when questioned a few moths later (thank goodness nothing happened in that time) discovered they were not covered if they ever left our property. They do not sell Segway insurance directly, but act as agents for Progressive. All 3 of ours are now covered through Progressive. USAA backs the service, etc.
Only wierd thing......make sure you get them to remove the roadside service coverage:rolleyes:

Unless you plan to go on a long distance glide without a chase car...then the roadside service coverage comes in handy in something goes wrong!

Yes, liability. No collision.

I went to the website and entered in my data. I even checked that I wanted collision, and it came up with a quote of $68, and didn't barf at the collision checkbox.

Maybe I did something wrong?

maybe you could convince them to keep extra charged batteries for those out of fuel experiences......:D

I was able to find comprehensive Segway insurance here (http://franchinoinsurance.com/new-jersey-nj-segway-insurance):

Liability coverage protects the owner / operator for bodily injury and property damage done to other people or things. Physical damage includes collision coverage (smashing the Segway) or comprehensive (a/k/a other than collision) protects the Segway from fire, theft, flood, etc.

However, I have two questions. First, it looks like it's only available in New Jersey, I need it in Tennessee. Does anyone know if comprehensive is available in TN? Second, it says their prices are around $200-$300. Does this sound reasonable for comprehensive? I ask this, because many of you have been posting quotes more around $80.

So that's way high then! Thanks for the tips. I'll check both of them out.

As previously stated in other insurance posts:

Home insurance usually only works if your Seg is stolen or damaged while it is at your home.

Liability and theft is handled by Progressive Ins. Co. The policy and it's cost is based on your zip code. People in some suburban or rural areas pay as little as $50 a year. Where I live, it's over $1000.

The fact is, insurance levels are a personal choice. What ever level makes you feel comfortable is the right choice for you.

I don't have insurance because I would probably have a 10x higher chance of hitting someone with my bike than a Segway, and I don't have liability on my bicycle. In my view, you really don't need liability insurance in many areas. Getting theft insurance is OK if it's a nominal fee. You decide.

Way high? $70-$80 per year seems to be in line with most Segway policies I've seen mentioned....

Pete,
He's saying that the $200-$300 that he was quoted or saw is "way high" relative to what you are paying.

Once again, Insurance premiums are based on the likelyhood of an accident happening which is based on the population density of your area. This is charted by your zip code.

Because of this criteria, there is no comparison of policy costs possible. Policies will range from $50 to $1200 per year, depending on where you live.

At this time, only Progressive Insurance is issuing liability and collision coverage.

Is there a way to get a Segway policy from Progressive's website, or do you have to call them? I can't seem to find it...

They used the Denali motorcycle policy (I think that's the name) when I had mine through progressive.

I just had the same experience with State Farm. First they didn't know what a Segway was, then came back with $228.00 each. I just went through Progressive on-line and insured both X2s for a total of $205.00, includes comprehensive and collision with a $100/$250 deductable, respectively. Now I know why they are called "Progressive", they know what a Segway is!!
