I know that Segway polo is twice a month in northern CA, how often should we expect larger events?
Madeleine and I had a GREAT time at the SoCal event, we're hooked!

If you glide it, they will come...
Set a date, find a place, publish it. Send me an email, I'll do my best to get an email out for you...

SoCal does a group glide up to 6 times a year, but the turnout has never been close to the numbers we saw Long Beach last weekend. In fact, I've seen several times where a person has scheduled a glide and no one showed up?! The difference this time was Sharon did a good job of organizing it and coordinating with Segway of Long Beach.
One thing I want to point out is that other than the speakers and Segway INC employeees flying out, last weekend came very close to a Segfest IMHO. Sure it wasn't 2 days, but for the NorCal folks, we ended up getting hotel rooms, and it would have been easy to stretch it into a whole weekend event. Now what could we have done to fill all that time, eh? 8^) 8^) 8^)
Long distance glides are about twice a year, but they only involve a few folks. They can either take an afternoon for prep rides or multiple days for true long distance glides. I'm hoping to do these glides more frequent now that I'm up in NorCal looking to explore. Maybe once per quarter!
ps - The BayArea SEG is pretty large and active. Hopefully, you've signed up for the Yahoo groups email list where everything is announced. We just did a 4th of July parade in Alemeda (plus excellent free lunch afterwards) and about 20 gliders participated.
Come on out to segway polo...we always have gliders show up who don't play. Last time we had a bunch of non-gliding spectators too! Also, now that you've put a polo mallet in your hand, you'll find I lay off on "converting you to the one true way"! Madeleine however has not felt the pure joy of a swinging mallet yet...so she's still fair game!! 8^) 8^) 8^)

Easy to get hooked when you have as many nice people as we had at the last two events. Shame you guys couldn't have stayed over for the parade on the 4th -- it was great. Looks like we'll have two more events by the end of September. Both of the 2 active dealers in SoCal have promised something in the next 2 months, but nothing this month. We may have to do something about that.
Do you have any ideas on what event(s) we could use as an excuse to converge somewhere -- festivals, air-shows, balloon fests, Vegas Events??? Oops, I assumed you'd have a shorter route to Vegas than to LA, but it looks like you have no direct routes as far as I can see on the map.

I would have a more direct route, but alas, my pilot's license is not current! Oh, and I have no plane to fly ;)

I would consider those two pretty serious obstacles. They are the same reasons I don't fly -- no license, and no plane:(.

Have license...getting close to having plane. These damn affordable partnerships keep popping up here in Sac.
I've often dreamed of flying into a Segfest/polo match. Of course, Cessna 172's are the best cargo carriers. You're lucky to get 4 people in one with just some small bags! Not llike jgbackes truck...the polo team mobile!

According to the SEG America newsletter, you should be expecting the Woz cup in september.
If I'm not mistaken (Karl, please correct me if I'm wrong), SEG America doesn't have enough volunteers to organize a big event (like a SegwayFesT) next to the Woz Cup. So as long as there are no volunteers showing up to organize a fest, I doubt there will be anything in the states.
There are a lot of people who have good ideas for a SegwayFesT, but unfortunately no volunteers to organize one.
In europe, we have a fest, called Me and My Segway, it has been held twice now, both times a great succes. I suggest you check www.mams.at for the dates of 2008. You don't have to worry about not being able to bring your own Segway with you. There will always be a possibility to rent a Segway.
There are some rumours that there might be a Segway event organized in France, but so far I haven't heard anything concrete yet.
I haven't heard of any other big events being organized, unfortunately.

Let's start with the fact that I have (had) master's papers for boats up to 100 feet (and a particular tonnage) in harbors and mixed waterways. I also have (had) a private pilot's (Fixed wing, non complex) liscense and I have (had) Jumpmaster and Instructor ratings in skydiving...
WHy is driving an airplane considered flying, when driving a boat not called swimming? I CAN fly, buy I most often do it outside of the airplane. I can also fly the plane so that others can fly (in or out)...
on a different topic...
For some of the better healed among us, what are the rules for general aviation regarding LiIion batteries? I suspect not so strict. I am wondering if maybe a charter flight for the segs or just the batteries may be the answer for a festival. A single flight of batteries from let's say, the west coast to texas, could carry lots of segs worth of batteries. The owners can fly commercial.
Just a thought. There are lots of pilots here on this forum. Something I have been stewing over for some time now...
Years ago, there was an advertisement in Sporties (?) trying to entice private pilots into using a seg instead of bike as local transport. I wonder where that all went to...

The decision to support the WOZ cup this summer was a major factor in not going forward with specific plans for another segfest. Lack of volunteers was another. THe thought that if the two competed, they would diminish both was a third consideration... With all that, we decided that one event would be best.
SInce it was an event that was focused around the WOZ cup, they were at the lead. The organizers of that event set the rules and dates. We were is the secondary seat. Our role in that event was to provide support, and to add some events specifically suited to our members.
MAMS is run by a great guy, an enthusiast, and a segway professional. I wish him luck in his events, and do encourage any and all to attend.

SEG America is still and always looking for volunteers to help with or to organize any event, local, regional, national or international. Just contact us, we will do our best to support the effort.

A thought occured to me (many do but don't get far), when you get your own plane :), why don't you start out on a cross country polo familarzation tour starting on the "right" coast (maybe Atlanta?), and working "left". Do a foto documentary or film on Seg Polo in America for the next enthusiast DVD. I'm quite sure you'd have host friends at every landing spot to introduce you to the local gliders and inspire them on a field of grass.
Oh well, just of thought. You do want to justify the cost of a flying partnership don't you? We'll all help you :).

Rather brillant idea. Make Dean carry the LiIons with his Citation Jet to the SegwayfesT! At least as long as the so-called Safe-Ion batteries are treated as if they're unsafe.

I'm confused! I really thought the question in this thread was about when the next get together will be.
But you're all talking about planes.
As long there is no volunteer, who wants to organize a get together, you can stop thinking about flying to somewhere.

OK, well let me see if this works for anyone....
How about a downtown San Jose glide on Sunday July 22nd.
We can also tour the Tech Museum if you are interested after the glide. I'll get the ball rolling. Please let me know if you can attend. Perhaps some of our SoCal friends would like a change of scenery.
Meet at 10am Sunday at Discovery Museum park. I'll bring donuts :)
In October how about doing 17 mile drive in Monterey/Carmel
