Traveling to Europe: Rights and Flights

All,

I am hoping you can give some insight or direction on European use with the Segway. What have you encountered as problems during your travel, or what kind of advice can you give.

I plan to travel before the end of the year from Philadelphia to Frankfurt, and take a local plane ride to a regional airport in Bavaria. While there, I would like to use my Segway P133, during the day as needed as I do here in large venues or long distances.

I may take a train ride from Roth to Munich for a day or two. Any advice on transportation systems within Germany and your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, has anyone purchased one of the large black Segway boxes directly from Inc for travel on a plane? How did it work out? Does the Segway fit snug in the large black Inc box?

As you may know Segways are not yet legal on Germany's roads... :(

Better do not bring your machine to Munich... see the thread Segway and the police in Germany (http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=15675) :mad: I think it's less likely to have issues in smaller towns, but...

Because of this I don't have any experience with Segways on trains, but one would need a train with a bicycle compartment (some regional trains have this) and it'd require a lifting of one meter or so...

If you travel 120 km eastward to the Czech Republic or 200 km southward to Austria, gliding with the Segway is perfectly legal... :rolleyes:

I would say plan your trip soon, leave your segway at home and continue you trip to Steyr in Austria, and you can have a lot of fun there.

Personally I think the black flight cases for your segway are way to expensive, check this forum, I do remember that some people have made flight cases their self. I'm sure if you can make a robot for FIRST, a flightcase is a piece-of-cake for you.

Apologies as I missed this one section of your post.

The Segway Airline case is an excellent case for the p series as the handlebar fits inside along with the PB.

However, it is a tad bit expensive and I'm not sure there are any available (although a dealer or two might have some).

That being said, you are likely better off making your own case or having one made for you. Ours was made out of 3/4 Marine plywood, which was probably overkill but we spent well under $100 for the case and it will last forever.

Thanks for all of the insights everyone. The purpose of taking the Segway is that it is my only means of mobility for any extended time. I am unfamiliar with any rights that may be similar to how ADA is in America.

I will be spending the majority of my time in the Roth area, as that is where my significant others family is. It would be nice to be able to see other areas, but the majority of our time will most likely be local with friends and family.
