Olaf,
They are not available ANYWHERE. They won't be released, as you mentioned, until July / August....and I'm not sure what year that is!

we will be releasing a "stand" to the public at this years segway meeting in steyr. a light-weight device to lean you segway on, fit on your handlebar to take with you. Maybe not as technical as the (maybe one-day released) original kickstand; but easy, flexible, cheaper.
wait for june 29th....to see it in steyr. we call it LEAN-ON-ME.

We have already "developed" our own stand. Well, somebody else developed it and we adapted it for our needs.
As I've told others, we use a standard pencil cup / holder, in black. We bought some at Ikea but they can also be purchased at virtually any stationary store, Carrefour, ASDA, Walmart, and the like.
Perfect height and at under $1 a great value for money!

$39 for a bicycle kickstand? Sure, it has been painted and adapted to the Segway but when we did this the cost was less than $3 and a little drilling (no paint though).
Go to a bike store and buy your own bicycle stand. Take a drill and drill two (2) holes. A little black paint and voila! You have the same stand.

OK... I do have to step in here and defend the fine folks at Segway of Phoenix ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200121404381 )... They have developed a bolt on accessory that satisfies the needs of many Gen 2 owners. I don't think that $39 is too much to pay to keep your $5000 plus investment from getting it's face dirty.
The kit comes packaged with the necessary hardware and attaches easily using 2 screws. A rubber insulator is also included to prevent the stand from scratching the machine's base. The parking stand is adjustable and works perfectly for machines of different heights (i2 vs. x2).
It might not be for everybody, but I have them available in my store and my customers are very satisfied with them.
Happy gliding!!!

I can't quite tell how it attaches... does it use the factory pre-drilled holes? Looks like it would be OK until INC comes out with one...

Pete,
The parking stand attaches using the holes on the base directly beneath the Lean Steer Frame pivot. There are two screws which must be removed first. The screws that are included with the kit are slightly longer.
Here are some pics that will give you a better idea of how it attaches: http://www.notestation.com/pics_segway-stand.htm
Good luck and Happy Gliding!

Rob,
Thanks for taking the time to explain the kickstand. Am I correct that its usage on an i2 (not X2) prevents both tires from simultaneously contacting a tall curb or step, making it difficult to navigate such obstacles with an i2? I know from experience that when my logo insert hits on a slightly irregular curb, one wheel can catch, tilting the platform and sending the machine into a tizzy. I just want to make sure I know what tradeoffs might be necessary to eliminate Eileen's penchant for leaning against every doctor's office wall.

John,
The answer to your question is... a definite maybe! :D
It truly is something that I did not give an awful lot of thought to, but I see where it may possibly be a problem when navigating up (or down) taller steps or curbs using RBM. I do not have much time on my i2 since installing my parking stand.
Here's what I can tell you for sure... In the retracted position, the lowest point of the parking stand is the foot which winds up being tucked up near the left wheel. With a fairly level platform, this point is roughly 4.5" above the ground. The bracket at the center of the machine is about 4.75" above the ground.
Both of these pieces do stick out ahead of the wheels. I would say about .5" for the parking stand foot and .75" for the bracket.
While this parking stand may not be perfect for 100% of us, it is 100% perfect for me!
Happy Gliding!

Hi,
The only problem we really encountered with customers, especially when they were trying the Segway out, was for them to step on the Segway while the parking stand was still extended, making it unscrew.
We replaced the screws with longer ones to make the parking stand more stable and harder to unhinge.

P.S.: Thank you Rob for your support :)
I was the first eBay customer of the DSI-Gear (Segway of Phoenix) kickstand. Whilst I was satisfied with the finish of the product (the pictures must show a prototype) I'm really disappointed with the useability! It break off going down the stairs (on the second step!!). I believe it wrecked the front portion of the thread in the aluminum block. NOT useable at all for owners who have to go up or down stairs, at least with the i2!
Now with the longer screws the outcome may be even more fatal, especially when mounting the Seg with the stand deployed! The platform is exactly level while parked! There's no chance to extend the stand because the space to the tire is limited!

I don't know how I missed it, but this is confusing having two parking stand threads going at the same time for the i2!
I made a comment on the other thread which would have been slightly different had I read this one. Oh well.
I designed and posted a simple stand, on yet another thread, that extended out the back about an inch past the tire. I did this because I always face the step (or curb) when climbing or dropping in rbm.
It was pointed out that a zero speed drop from a curb has some potential for problems, but since I already have a trailer hitch, I am already exposed to that danger. I have never in 4 years hit the hitch, mostly because when I glide down a curb, I never land within an inch if it, I am rolling forward...
I happen to also like the machine to tilt to the rear as people are less likely to step on...(The CS or lean steer frame are in the way.)
Has anyone tried to mount this DSI stand on the rear? What would the affect be?

Ehm... it would tip over because the leansteer frame overbalance the kickstand's weight... :o

I meant that it would have to stick out in a manner to allow the whole machine to tilt toward the rear. Instead of dropping down from the platform, it could pivot to go straight out back, and then when the machine was tilted back, it would make contact with the ground...

Hi Johannes,
Actually the longer screws do not make the stand extend at all as the original holes drilled in the Segway are as long as the screws. The reason why you had trouble with the kickstand was bec. of the shorter screws as they would not make the kickstand attach properly. Please contact DSI-GEAR and they will ship you the longer screws free of charge. We apologize for the inconvenience.

With the longer screws it may not snap off but damage the Segway more severely... http://www.langkawi.dk/smileys/t1.gif

Now THATS a nice kickstand:

Seen at the MAMS meeting in Steyr (Austria). It's selfmade by a guy from Eastern Germany. The tube has a slot whit a lever sticking out to move the stand up and down. He want to improve the design with a spring or maybe an elastic band. It's mounted to the existing holes in the LSF.

The longer screws arrived - big difference, eh? The short ones are only catching 2-3 twists I guess...

I bought one of these from my local dealer a week ago today during our Atlanta glide in Piedmont Park which was great by the way (see link http://picasaweb.google.com/USNCruiterRetired/June2007SegwayGlide?authkey=MUYR6TL5L6k ). I've been giving it the "acid" test for the last week and find it very satisfactory. Some have said it won't climb curbs or steps. True. But I haven't found a real need to do that myself. It will go down them, and hasn't gotten hung on anything during a normal glide yet. Looks like it belongs (I have one on mine in group photo) and easy to use. One thing (besides price) I like is that it may be more practible than the factory model if it ever comes out. When on stand you can move the LSF left and right as "idiot" passers by might be inclined to do. No effect as it's attached to base. If the factory model which is attached to the LSF is wiggled in that fashion, I can see a problem. Anyway for the money, it's good for the seller and good for the buyer. I'm a happy camper.

We purchased two parking stands from Phoenix and liked them.
They sent us two longer screws almost immediately and they were too long to screw in so the kickstand flopped and we put the shorter screws back.
We really like the kickstands but the user should be aware of the following -
If you are placing the I2 in yor car face down it will rub/hit on your carpet. Since I have a trailer hitch on mine it can no longer go back side down either.
(We are getting a SEGVATOR to solve this problem...)
The last problem is that you cannot use the kickstand (at least on our machines) with the power turned on as you cannot make the kickstand long enough to keep the platform level without rubbing on the tires when the kick is up.
The kick stand is recommended -
I hope someone finds this diatribe helpful.
Bill
