This weekend my wife and I headed up for a weekend getaway. She was having a girls day, and I wanted to play Segway :)

During the day we each went our seperate ways, at night we eat way too much expensive food and enjoyed the SF night-life.

Saturday my trip began at Union Square, then down to the piers and onto the bike trail toward the Golden Gate bridge. Boy am I glad I wore a jacket, the wind off the bay is bone chilling! The trip to the bridge took about an hour, lots of fun hills to climb and everyone seemed to be enjoying a day off work.

The bike trail for the Golden Gate Bridge goes underneath the bridge from Fort Point. I decided to take the bike route, because the pedestrian side was quite crowded. Up and around and I was on the bridge! What FUN! Boy the wind was blowing like crazy.

About half way down I pulled out my cell phone and took about thirty seconds of video "Me On The Bridge" (no i will not be creating a DVD). Then I was off to the north side. I looked down at the "fuel guage" and turned right around, I was at 1/2 charge.

After crossing back over the bridge I was greeted by a member of Law Enforcement :( You all probably know this already... It's against the law to take a Segway on the Golden Gate Bridge. WOW.

I said I would not do it again and he let me off with a warning. He took down my SSAN (second time I've given it to LE in a week).

I rode through Precidio back down the Powell, street and I made it back to the Hotel with ZERO charge remaining in the batteries.

Keen fun, SF is very pretty, just stay off the Bridge!

Weird city with weird laws.

Glad you didn't get a ticket and you had some fun.

Advice heeded.

I use my RV a lot on weekends, and would love to visit SF in it. However, the RV park is a considerable distance from downtown and I'm wondering about the practicality/safety of using the Segway there (as I do in my other weekend travels). Since Segways are not allowed on SF sidewalks, how does one manage this? I've driven the streets there, and considering the traffic/parking/narrow streets, I would think that it might make for hazardous riding.

Jeff, can you elaborate on this? It sounds like you had no problems around the city, so how did you find touring on city streets without using sidewalks?

I spent most of the time on the city streets and bike paths, I did have to use the sidewalk once, but I just traveled very slowly.

My understanding is the law is there to make it your fault if there is ANY accident. I've glided past a few cops while on the sidewalk and they seem to care less.

I guess I'll have to try it some time. Don't you find the street traffic a bit scary?
