View Full Version : Segways and Movies
Just watched the Coast Guard movie "The Guardian" with Kevin Costner. At 35:24, the camera pans to reveal a Segway I167/I170 with a camera man holding a camera with his right hand while steering with his left. Funny.

No way! I watched that the other week and didn't spot it. I'll have to rent it again!
I posted to say there was a Segway gliding in a public crowd shot in The Sentinel (http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=14823)
Big Momma's House (2, I think) has a huge chase scene in it between Big Momma and someone. People keep telling me she (he!) was riding on a Segway - but in fact it was a Q! Funny though knowing how a Q would actually behave in the real world.
Was it Agent Cody Banks, where they all have one at the end or something?

Widescreen NTSC version!

I have now viewed The Guardian again (which by the way is an excellent film; Andrew Davis brings back that edge of your seat action which he showed us in The Fugitive).
I have seen the Segway. What we are actually seeing is a ghost of a person that was actually using a Segway in that pool area a year prior. His Segway slipped and went to the bottom of the pool and in an attempt to save it, alas he drowned. There have been many reports of this spirit gliding in the area but this is the first time we are lucky enough to have caught it on film!!!
Now back to reality. He appears to be one of the sound engineers evidenced by the mini-boom mike and headphones he has in shot 35:21.
I am going to try to find out he is next time on the set of a bigger production (can't wait to put this picture in my iphone).
Along these lines with Segways in films, I am a film/commercial actor and I recently gave this message to one of my local casting agents. What do you think?
"I recently bought, after much consideration, a black Segway i2. The reason why I am telling you is in case you want me to use it for a particular scene. I don't know of another actor in the area that has one. It can be used indoors and out and I think it would add nice visual "texture" to a background scene. As a plus, if the Segway was just a little blip in the background in a movie it could:
-make the film unique in just a small way. I have never seen one in a film.
-give the impression that the production is environmentally conscious and bold enough to show alternate forms of transportation (you probably know the Segway is electric)
-show the viewers what a Segway looks and acts like (it is pretty cool, wait until you try it!)
And lastly, the director is just gonna' want to try it out when he sees it. Why not let him have a little fun?"
and of course it would add to the acceptance factor to the general public and hopefully increase the purchase of Segways.
