View Full Version : Should I buy a Segway

I am thinking about purchasing a Segway and have a few questions. I live on the North Side of Chicago and my commute would be 4 or 5 miles round trip. I have been on a Segway and have taken a tour.

1 Chicago- What are the Segway Laws in Chicago? Any police problems? Gray areas? I went to the downtown Segway dealer last week and the person working at the store said " as far as they know you can ride on any street in Chicago" I want to ride on the sidewalk not the street. The guy at the store may have been new because when I asked about buying an new i2 or a used Segway he asked if I could come back next Wednesday when the owner would be in the store. A little strange that I could not have bought a Segway that day if I wanted. Went into the store 90% ready to buy, left 70% ready to buy.

2 Model- Should I buy a new i2 or a new/used i180, p133, other ?

3 Price- Any thoughts or comments on pricing or financing would be appreciated. If I buy from out of State would there be any sales tax?

Thanks

Dave

I rode a Segway for the first time in Chicago, and the city seems ideal for gliding. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

1. Chicago is extremelly Segway-friendly. I was visiting Chicago and thinking about taking my Segway with me, so I emailed Segway Experience of Chicago and asked about applicable laws, and their director of sales and marketing told me that Segways are fully permitted on all sidewalks in Chicago. If that's the dealership you visited, the store clerk asking you to come back later is understandable, as they run a pretty big touring operation and that's where they focus their efforts, and I'd bet most of their guides aren't trained to sell them.

2. It's really a personal preferrence which model you buy. The p133 has been long since discontinued and is almost impossible to find, but if you can get one, it's the ideal machine for urban use. As for the I series models, I'd go with a Gen 2 model myself if I was buying today. The ride feels much smoother and more refined to me, and it just looks cooler.

3. Most stores will use the GE FUNancing program, which I believe is 6 months no interest. If you bought out of state there wouldn't be any sales tax, but you should always support a local dealer. That way if you have any problems or questions, they'll be able to easily help you without having to worry about warrenty issues or shipping.

I understand that being a Red Sox fan helps in Boston, but why would it affect a segway sale in Chicago?

Chicago,

I live in Wrigleyville (so Desert_Seg, what do you think my answer is to your question). I have an I2 that I use all over the city.

I originally called the store on Michigan Avenue and got the same lack of knowledge feeling from them. So instead I went and saw Jim out in La Grange. It was well worth the trip. He and Mike are very knowledgable and approachable.

I purchased my i2 from them and will continue to go to them. They will be able to service anything that might come up with the machine.

Where in the City are you at?

I don't live in Chicago, but in Lowell, MA. I wondered about buying one for 2 years, and this March finally bought a new i2. I love it for going around town, it saves me lot's of gas and I have about 16 mile range on a charge. Buy one, you will love it.
